Any "Dune" book lovers out there?

by Thunderwolf allnurses Guide

In my mind and heart, "Dune" is a classic read...relevant then when it was first written...even more relevant now 40 years later. It has everything...politics, love story, social study, philosophy, economics, war, religion, spiritual, science, history.....all wrapped up into one...the hallmark of a classic. Since the original book release in 1965, the author (Frank Herbert) continued to write additional books, creating a series.

Classic Dune:
Dune
Messiah of Dune
Children of Dune
God Emperor of Dune
Heretics of Dune
Chaperhouse: Dune

Unfortunately, and with great loss, Frank Herbert passed away in 1986....and there was nothing for long time which followed...until...his son, Brian Herbert picked up where Frank Herbert left off (using discovered manuscripts written by his father).

In collaboration with Kevin Anderson, Brian Herbert picked up the unfinished masterpiece in order to continue the tale to its grand finale....as well as expanding upon the tale further by writing many indepth prequels to the original, based upon his father's unreleased material.

Dune Finale:
Hunters of Dune
Sandworms of Dune

Legends of Dune:
The Butlerian Jihad
The Machine Crusade
The Battle of Corrin

Prelude to Dune:
House Atreides
House Harkonnen
House Corrino

Currently, Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson have been busy creating a new series to flush out the tale even a bit more, focused on several key characters from the original (classic) Dune series.

Heroes of Dune:
Paul of Dune (now out in hardback)
Jessica of Dune (will be out in 2009)
Irulan of Dune (yet to be written)
Leto of Dune (yet to be written)

Sorry to hear, Sue. But, that's OK.

Well...someone out there has gotta love it.

I'm patient.

Appreciate the response.

Thank you,
Dune has been one of my favorite books since I first read it 30 years ago or so. I haven't read all that you have mentioned, so thanks for the list and the link, I'll put my order in for Christmas.

You are most welcome, joannep.

Thanks for reply. I know I can't be the only person on the board that has enjoyed Dune. Your post refreshed my spirits.

Hugs.

It's my favorite book, ever. I think I've read it at least 100 times, I kid you not. When I'm stressed out, it's my go to read, because it's so easy to get lost in.

IMHO, it is the template for all world building scifi that followed. I'm not a fan of the later books, just the initial novel. I've tried to read the newest ones, but the "voice" just isn't the same.

BTW, I have a first edition of Dune, and it's falling apart. I often think I should have bought a "reading" copy, but the best books SHOULD be read to shreds, don't you think?

I liked the first one the best. I was too young to really get it the first time I read it, it was just a story. As I got older, I see or hear things and go, "wait a minute, isn't that out of Dune?", then realized it was the other way around: the world was being reflected in the book. I read the first 3 or 4.

I got so into it as a teen that they invaded my dreams! I was working in a restaurant, and we couldn't serve water unless asked for due to drought/water restrictions (that part was real), and dreamed a whole tribe of robed Fremen walked in demanding water. :chuckle

Thanks for your replies, guys. DUNE seems to be a timeless book...especially in relation to politics and commerce...much can be applied today. And Dune's CHOAM, in my mind, relates to our current day Corporate lobbyism in our government and the concentration of commodity power/monopolies often found in our big Corps. Anyway, Dune is prophetic in many ways...multidimentional in scope.

In relation to our stock market, The Spice must flow.

I read the series up to "Children of Dune" and stopped for some reason. The movies of course never could tell the whole story in those books either. Thanks for the list, I may have to check them out of the library and see if I like them before I buy.
