Inspired...and fired!

Updated Feb 11, 2008 at 11:13 AM by sirI

There lives here in Cleveland a nurse named Adrienne Zurub. She worked in the open heart OR at the Cleveland Clinic for 26 years, but she made the mistake of writing a book about her life and experiences and - I am sure you will be shocked - the Cleveland Clinic fired her a few weeks ago because of her book!
Adrienne is a nurse, writer-poet and a comedienne. She has been called "one of the funniest women in America."
Her book, "Notes From the Mothership" is available on Amazon. com. ("The Mothership" as many Clinic employees know, is how many of us refer to the main campus of the Cleveland Clinic hospital system.)

I would think she knew she was jeopardizing her job. Perhaps she should have resigned prior to the book being published. It's unfortunate but I can see the ex-employer's view also.

If the author merely wanted to share her experiences, she could have written the book without identifying her employer. But that might have made the book less interesting to potential readers.

Regardless of her "pure" intent, undoubtedly, some of her stories reflected badly on the Cleveland Clinic. I know of no business that will tolerate an employee writing and publishing a book detailing negative aspects of employment, job functions, customer relations or business practices.

I agree, she had to know that she was placing her job in jeopardy.

I agree. She should have known that she was jeopardizing her job. She also should have known to get her employer's approval prior to publishing anything that they might reflect badly on them. That's standard practice among professionals.

Read the review and am rushing right over to my Barnes and Noble site with fingers crossed they have copies left!

Edit: Darn, they are sold out. I am guessing she won't be needing that job anymore.

Not shocked -- I agree with the others; unless the book is an enthusiastic, unambiguous "love letter" to the Cleveland Clinic system, she should have expected to be fired.

Agree with other posters.

It's great she found a new career.

If she was truly fearful of losing her job, she could have used a pseudonym.
Perhaps the firing will be in her next book....
I'll have to read it!

Nurse Cleveland nurse publishes book and is fired!
A Cleveland RN, Adrienne Zurub, publishes book "Notes From the Mothership: The Naked Invisibles" and is fired! For those of you who aren't from Cleveland, "the Mothership" is what those of us here in Cleveland call the main campus of Cleveland Clinic hospital system. Although I have not yet read the book, Amazon is sold out, I CAN'T WAIT TO READ IT to see what all the fuss is. There will be a book signing at the Joseph-Beth Bookstore at Legacy Village in Beachwood, Ohio on: Thursday, March 6, 2008 7pm-9pm for anyone who is near the area and would like to show support for a nurse colleague.

This will suprise no one who has done bedside nursing. We all know what managment is like and if we wrote something like that we would expect to be fired. I hear it is really a good book.
