It is a biographical novel about Mary Todd Lincoln.
The focus in on the years leading up to the Civil War and the decades after told from her perspective.
It is aboit 95% fact with some liberties to fill in. Example - She had migraine headaches with nausea and photophobia. The author surmises she probably had a substance abuse problem because all the OTC remedies of the time contained alcohol or laudanum, or both. With her symptome she must have taken them.
That is the biggest liberty with the truth because there is no historical evidence for that.

Anyway it is a good read and the first in a "Patriotic Ladies" series.
Sounds interesting. I haven't read that one but I read a different biography of her years ago. She had a lot of struggles and the last years of her life were very sad.

Skeleton Man by Tony Hillerman. It's been awhile since I read any of his books, which are murder mysteries occurring in the Four Corners area of the Southwest, and which are solved by Native American investigators/tribal policemen. His writings incorporate the Native American customs/beliefs and also describe the timeless beauty of the area (which it's obvious he loves).

I LOVE the book threads!

I always have something to read for my enjoyment, even if it means only a couple of pages before I fall asleep.

Recently, I finished Stephen King's Cell...not bad, kind of The Stand revisited, only the lighter version. Currently I am working on We Band of Angels: The Untold Story of American Nurses Trapped on Baatan by the Japenese by Elizabeth Norman. Fascinating! I love historical books on WWII, this one goes in depth with interviews with the nurses. It is a shame how these heros were virtually ignored when it came time to bestow medals for courageous service.

Anything by Mercedes Lackey. There are about 30 or so books in the Valdemar series, the first triology is Arrows of the Queen. She writes with very strong female leads. She has also started writing "fairy tales", set in England of the 1800s, one is a Cinderella, another Sleeping Beauty, Wild Swan, etc. for adults. Really good fiction.

For a while there was a forum over at the Discovery channels website that she used to regularly contribute to. She used the screen name Owlflight and she is very interested in birds. I haven't read any of the new fairy tales. I'll have to give those a look see.

This Capote book isn't autobiographical. I haven't seen the movie, so I can't compare them.

The Templar book is pretty awful. It's one of the consipiracy theories about the Vatican and the Templars and stolen goods that have codes and the FBI and a beautiful archeaologist. I don't recommend it. It's getting more trite as it goes on. Not sure I'm going to finish it.

Are the fairy tales similar to the ones like "Wicked"? Rewriting the tales seems to be the trend these days. along with the Templar/Vatican/Conspiracy books.

Truly sad.
I'm amazed so many kept any joy when infant mortality was so high.

I just finished the "In Death" series by J.D.Robb AKA Nora Roberts. It's main character is police Lt. Eve Dallas. The setting is NY city in the year 2059. Dallas is a homicide investigator. So far the series includes about 20 books with another coming out in Nov. Robb really writes a good mystery while expanding on the personality and relationships of her charactors that can't be done in a single novel. Now I'm starting "The Stand" by Stephen King. That should last me awhile "cause it's about 1000 pages. Don't know if this is a good book to read with all the talk of the bird flu. My dd says that I should read "The Cell" next. But a little of Stephen King goes a long way for me. His type of books are not my usual cuppa tea.

Just got done reading "Micah" by Laurell K. Hamilton. Eagerly awaiting her new book for the year. She writes supernatural romance books. Nice and Trashy! Just the way I like them. The best part is that it has absolutely nothing to do with Nursing! I love reading but if the book is really good it will only take me a couple of hours to finish because I devour them so fast. *Sigh* they just don't last as long as they use to.
