Boring, and totally depressing...........I've never liked any of the Dickens stories because they were all so full of pain and anguish and fear and loathing. Frankly, I'd rather read a book that scares me to pieces than one that makes me angry and depressed.

...How I LOVE to read

The few that are off the top of my head now (cause there is more) is:

The World According to Garp-John Irving
Anna Karenina-Leo Tolstoy
Catch 22-Joseph Heller

I've read tons of books but there are only some that I can go back and read more than once. Catch 22 always cheers me up

I must confess I love me some Charles Dickens... but just to let you know I'm ok, I also love To Kill A Mockingbird, John Irving, and a good spy novel...

I'm a voracious reader; I put away between 3 and 4 books a week, depending. And I'll read just about anything, except mysteries and romance. Some I keep coming back to:

Life of Pi
Ender's Game
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series
The Thirteenth Tale
Little Women
Lamb (Christopher Moore)
The Road
1984
Brave New World
Oryx and Crake
The Handmaids Tale
Stiff, Spook, and Bonk (3 books by Mary Roach)

That being said, I don't know that I have a single great favorite. But, measured in sheer number of re-reads, Jane Eyre would be a good contender. I've probably read it at least a hundred times. It's silly, really, especially considering my distaste for other romances. The story is predictable, the characters are histrionic, the plot points are unbelievable, the writing is melodramatic, and the ending is sentimental. And yet. I read it for the first time when I was 13. I have since worn out an untold number of copies, and I still come away with something new with each re-read. I recently bought a beautiful illustrated paperback copy, but it is my wish to find a hardback annotated copy. All this over a gothic bit of fluff.

Desiree' about Napoleon's first love who later became the queen of Sweden. I could read it start to finish and then restart.

The above books are also many of my favorites. Right now I've sunk my teeth and my Amazon account into the Vampire books of Sookie Stackhouse, and the cop/bookscout Cliff Janeway by John Dunning.

I have a stack maybe a foot high ongoing at all times. Then I got U is for undertow for a gift today. I must fit it in there somewhere.

And arggggh until I get my eye done I'm having to read large print. I am NOT getting old, I am NOT.
