The Scarlet Letter - that is my alltime favorite piece of classic lit. (the movie was ok but not superb, IMO)
I like anything Mark Twain writes. He's so funny.
The Green Mile
When I'm feeling macabre, anything by Poe will do.
Baby Catcher by Peggy Vincent is indeed quite a good one.
I just read The Gospel Side of Elvis by Joe Moscheo and thought it was REALLY good.
Night (thanks for reminding me that I like that one, bethin!)
Enrique's Journey by Sonia Nazario

My absolute favorite, favorite, favorite short story ever is "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry.

I love to read, so this is in no way an exhaustive list. We all seem to be a bunch of bookworms. Great thread.

Arwen, the 2 books that made me feel that way were LOTR and Till We Have Faces by C.S.Lewis. That's what makes them my favorite - that there are so many facets that every time I pick them up, I see something different.

Diary, have you read The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis? Very thought-provoking.
I think JRRT and C.S. Lewis were acquaintances....if I'm not mistaken.

I have not read The Screwtape Letters - perhaps will look in to it.

Yes, I do believe they were friends - Can you imagine being friends with such smart, creative people?

My all time favorite. People who want to become nurses love this one! A perfect gift for a wannabe nurse:
Intensive Care, the Story of a Nurse by Echo Herron
I love, absolutely love to read this book! I have lived the same things she writes about in this book even though it was written in the mid 1980s.

Others:
Moll Flanders (Defoe) First English Novel..way cool! (He uses distemper that has nothing to do with dogs!)
Three Musketeers (Dumas) unedited virgin please. (notice the silly play on words!)

And
Scarlet Letter (Hawthorne) read this in eighth grade, loved it!
Fahrenheit 451 (Bradberry)
Letters From Carthage (James) contemporary witty and funny as heck!
