Anyone else annoyed with Grey's Anatomy?

by BullyLoveRN Platinum Member

WARNING: This is a vent post! Beware!!!:angryfire:bluec ry1::Crash::smiley_ab:smackin gfmy::thnkg::igts ytI just cussed out the world in emoticons!!!!!!! =)

Okay, the first few seasons really made nurses look like skanky morons, but they seemed to have laid off for a while, well last night's episode has really p*ssed me off! The whole "have fun playing nurse" comment is really making me angry!!!!!!

Seriously, why do the writers of this show think being a nurse is so horrific? It's bad enough they contribute to the ignorance of the public about the dynamics and inner-workings of hospitals: for instance, 95% of the work they write the "doctors" doing is actually nurse work? Don't get me wrong, I love the b*tchy, catty, incestuous, drama... it's the reason the show is usually so good! But come on, nurses have it bad enough on this show (and in real life) being practically invisible, is it necessary to blatantly degrade them as well???

I certainly hope none of the writers ever have to visit a hospital.... because trust me...they would be waiting a LONG time for a surgeon to answer their call bell, bring them food and drinks, help them to the bathroom, give them a bath, change their diapers, administer their pain medicine, assess them and report problems as needed, be a shoulder for them to cry on or complain to, provide support and education to them and their families, advocate for them when the doctors orders are incorrect, organize and coordinate all of their care, etc, etc!

I know, I know it's a TV show, not real life, but I firmly believe you can have all the fun, drama, sarcasm, laughs, and tears without being SO unrealistic!!!! UGHHHH!!!

Okay, I'm better now!

The only medical shows I have watched consistently since Chicago Hope went off the air have been House and Nurse Jackie after I got over my initial distaste. I just don't have any interest in the others and never have.

Have you seen Mercy yet??
It focuses on three nurses, and yeah, might not be super realistic, however it does at least have a positive ascept besides the whole "shanky" nurse sterotypes that greys puts out there.

I do agree that there is no good role model on television.

That is exactly what I always say! So if the doctors really do all of this work and hang around my the bedside all day, what is the nurse's job?

So annoying.

Yeah, I really only like GA for the characters of Yang, Baily, and Sloane... the show could be about janitors, pool cleaners, teachers, CEO's or anything... I just like the sarcasm and smart-a**-ness that they have. IMO, ABC fired the only actor/character who played a believable surgeon (I, of course, mean Burke.... not George! That boy wouldn't have lasted a day in a real hospital!) Sort of like the only reason I watched ER for so long was (first George Clooney) and then Noah Wiley (sp?). Abby becoming a MD?... what nurse in her right mind wants to be an MD? (just kidding!) Scrubs is a good show too (it's really funny)... it shows the interns as ignorant and inexperienced, the attending is a the hilarious self-loving, arrogant a**hole, and the nurse is a strong, smart woman who is not afraid to kick a little butt!

I know some nurses don't like Nurse Jackie because Edie Falco's character is addicted to pain meds (and uses them at work!!!!) and is unfaithful. But at least it portrays nursing more accurately in terms of us "running the show" so-to-speak! I also love how they portray the new nurse! I have only been a nurse for two years, and I still feel like a lost puppy sometimes! Luckily I had an awesome preceptor as well, she was no-nonsense and didn't baby me... she was like Jackie... only without the narcotic dependency!

I do miss Chicago Hope, to be honest I don't really remember anything specific, I just remember I loved it!

I've only ever watched two episodes of this show.

Just don't watch it. God knows how many seasons it's gone into now but I won't watch this garbage. Or buy any of the scrubs associated with the program.

I agree.. when I heard that my mouth kind of dropped.. I understand that the show is centered around doctors, but during all my clinical rotations I have yet to see doctors answering call bells and walking around checking on patients unless it was for a very important cause. The show is sometimes degrading to nurses and at times it shows a false image of how a hospital is. ((Sarcasm -- because.. like... yea.. Surgeons walk around administering all medications and hanging IVs to their 10 patients)) ..Don't get me started on B/S i have to put up with for being a male lol

Prepare to flame me.
But wouldn't that be like, the worst thing one cocky, arrogant surgeon could say to another cocky arrogant surgeon? "Have fun playing nurse" wasn't aimed at making nurses look bad, it was just said to make Lexi feel bad about her role in the surgery.
Don't get me wrong, I do hate how the show portrays nurses (want to have some fun? Send the show an email about it instead of venting here) But I don't think yesterday's episode was the absolute worst they've ever done with their portrayal of us. What about last week's episode, where the nurse tossed the chart to Yang, and said "this patient's having pain" without assessing the pain, or even knowing who the patient's doctor was? Or the one where the nurse pages Izzy because the patient took his heart monitor leads off? Seriously, there have been way worse portrayals of nurses on Grey's than last night's episode!
