Conan Holds His Own

CONAN O'Brien got off to a respectable start on his first day as the new host of "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien."

Nearly twice the usual "Tonight Show" audience tuned in to NBC to watch O'Brien's skit-filled debut on Monday, according to preliminary data gathered from major cities. (Final ratings numbers won't be available until next week.)

The ratings boost spilled over to "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," who also attracted more viewers than usual for his Monday night show.

Despite trouncing timeslot rivals CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman" and ABC's "Nightline," O'Brien wasn't able to beat vacating "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno's exit show last Friday. Leno's final show drew slightly more than twice the audience that his previous daily shows got over the years, according to preliminary results.

Meanwhile, NBC announced that Sept. 14 will be the official start date for the comedian's primetime talk show, "The Jay Leno Show."

This will give Leno a full week's head start on the rest of the primetime fall schedule, which begins on Sept. 21.

I haven't been able to watch Conan yet. I only occasionally watched his show in the past. Have read reviews of his first days on the job, and really wonder why they take the approach that this is such a big deal. Conan has all those years experience so he really is doing nothing new. I sincerely wish him success. I do not like the idea of the five day a week Leno show. Big excuse to limit the introduction of new prime time shows and save money. I won't bother watching NBC during the 10 o'clock hour. There has to be something to watch elsewhere. And I'm usually driving to work at this time anyway.

I watched his first two shows - and I laughed out loud. I usually am not that crazy about him.

I will definitely miss Jay. I look forward to his new show. I hope he keeps up with Jay Walking!!

I like Conan most of the time---it's probably going to take some time for us to get comfortable with him in Jay's spot!

And Jay definitely needs to keep doing Jay Walking!

Just watched Conan with William Shatner----hysterically funny. He's really coming into his own comedic show.
