Dirty Harry, Meet Nurse Jackie: AJN’s Editor-in-Chief Emeritus Takes Sneak Peak at First Six Episodes of Showtime Series

June 8, 2009

Diana J. Mason, PhD, RN, AJN editor-in-chief emeritus

Today Showtime launches Nurse Jackie, its new series starting Edie Falco. The publicity people at Showtime saw my initial post on the trailer, so they sent me the first six episodes to watch. (Don’t worry, nothing I write here should spoil any major plot point in the coming episodes.)

This is already a controversial series. Postings on a nurses’ listserv indicate that many nurses who have watched the trailer or first episode aren’t thrilled with nurse Jackie Peyton. She’s addicted to pain medication that she obtains from the hospital pharmacist with whom she is having an affair. Although she’s smart and a fierce advocate for patients, she often goes beyond the bounds of appropriate professional conduct, as when she forges the signature of a dead bicycle messenger to authorize donation of his organs. (The disregard for official procedures and rules shown by Clint Eastwood’s Dirty Harry character came to mind when Jackie flushed down the toilet an ear that a prostitute had cut off the john who’d stabbed her.)

I have to find a way to watch the show since I don't have Showtime on my cable subsciption. Seems like she is the nurse equivilant to House based on what you're reporting.

I got that much just looking at the banner, course she is nowhere near as sexy as House.

I mean smart...

Maybe HuHu will allow me to watch it...I really want to see it, but am not interested in adding Showtime to my already expensive cable bill. It may be very interesting.

I noticed Nurse Jackie is available for streaming on Netflix. I'm not sure if they will show all the episodes for the whole season, but I hope so because I don't get Showtime either. There are other ways to watch episodes online but I won't mention them here. I generally like all the series that Showtime has (Dexter, United States of Tara), but so far I'm on the fence about this one.

I LOVE the review given, and it is just what I was unable to put into words on the boards that debated the series. I saw her as courageous, funny, and deeply flawed.

You can watch the first episode for free on Showtime's website:

I enjoyed it, but then again, I like House.

I've only seen the very first ep which a friend sent me - I thought it was flat out funny. I'm not sure if I'll get to see the rest of it as I don't think our cable will show it

My opinion is that it's dry, dark humour, over the top and she does things that real nurses secretly want to do but can't, due to legal and moral issues (forging the donor form, abusing the young med reg etc).

It's black comedy really, which I love as I'm probably too jaded for the warm fuzzy stuff these days

p.s. I'm Australian - we love inappropriate humour down here!

The show is that and I've also described it that way. And like House, she takes the pain meds for that affliction of every long-term nurse - back pain.

I loved it. LOVED it.

EXACTLY!!!

I think a lot of people are taking this show WAY too seriously as a poor reflection on nursing. I don't see people getting crazed over the way House portrays doctors. Or the way Rescue Me portrays firemen. *shrugs* It's just entertainment.

My non nursing friends thought Nurse Jackie was really cool!
