Are the majority of nurses pro life?

I know that as a nurse, I have the right to refuse to participate in morally objectable services (thank you, Bush). If ever asked to to assist with an abortion, I will take advantage of that right without losing my license in a patient abandonment lawsuit.

Have any nurses here ever had to say "No"? Have you ever felt pressured into participating in a case you morally objected to? How did you react?

1. The thread title has nothing to do with your question.
2. This topic has been debated over and over. Do a search, there's a lot of opinions out there.
3. What if your pt's life depended on termination of her pregnancy? Would you still bow out?
4. Life is shades of gray, not black & white.

I'm very pro-life. I think the opinions of nurses on this topic tend to run to either extreme.

Morally objectionable? I think a lot of what we do with pain meds and procedures that are not needed is to pacify patients, doctors, or nurses desires for peace and quiet more than for the actual medical needs of the patients. But I've come to grips that this isn't utopia and have jumped on the bandwagon.

I definitely would NOT assist with an abortion(other than a D&C of a nonviable fetus).

Just playing devil's advocate, because I am pro-choice. But, I have brought that argument up with my parents who are strong pro-life. They counter with something about it being gods will, the mother should be willing to sacrifice to save the baby and not messing with God's plan. If someone believes this, then by all means, bow out and let a nurse who will not deliver tainted care step in.

As far as the ? for the OP goes. IDK what the statistics on being one way or another are. I know I am not pro-life. I have my reasons.

Actually...........I will not go as far as to say I though. I guess you could call me...........the Couples Version of Pro-choice. I think the couple should have the choice. If one or the other wants the child though, then........thats that. It should take the consent of both parties for an abortion to take place.

Just a little advice for the OP though. If you feel that strongly about something......don't put yourself in a position to have to make a stand while on the job. That would be cavalier and foolish. Its as simple as that. Don't work where such a thing is practiced. The time to show your beliefs and values is when you are job seeking, not while you are on the clock and people are relying on you. Stick to Christian/Catholic based facilities and you will be safe.

I'm pro-choice, but would not choose abortion for myself and I wouldn't want to participate in one unless it was to save the life of the mother, or if the fetus was nonviable. Obviously, I wouldn't work in a facility that routinely does abortions for other reasons. That way, I wouldn't need to worry about projecting my own values onto others and infringing on their right to make their own choices. That would be like a vegetarian getting a job in a butcher shop and then refusing to touch the meat, wouldn't it? I didn't need Bush to help me figure that one out.

As far as I know , ALL NURSES are prolife.

And for many of us, being prolife requires us to also be prochoice.

Because being prochoice does not equal being antilife

While I'm not sure I agree with your entire statement ("prolife" is quite the inflammatory word choice), your last line is priceless. It would make a great signature line! Being pro-choice does not equal being anti-life, and that applies to more things than the abortion debate.

Well, I don't know about "the majority of nurses" nor am I even clear what is meant by "pro-life." The term "pro-life" means different things to different people... kind of like, "I support the troops."

For my part, I am ardently anti-abortion (in most cases) but staunchly pro-choice... I do not believe that society is well served by permitting the government to make that determination.

I am thankful I work at a Catholic Hospital so I don't even have to think about that.
