Missonary Nurses

by mzchas

Hello:

I'm a second career student, who was recently ordained a Missionary early this year. I was recently laid off from work and after thinking about it for a while, I have decided to go back to school to become a Nurse, eventually becoming a Nurse Practitioner. But, as I was preparing my mind to transition into the nursing role, I wanted to put the two together: being a nurse missionary. I strongly believe this is where God is leading me.

Early this year, my church went to Antigua to start a Heath Fair for the people of Antigua who were in desperate need of medical attention. I was unable to go due to being laid off, but I heard it was a great success and the people really appreciated it. Knowing they were going to continue with the Health Fair annually, I was determined to go back to work as a Missionary, but also to observe the health care workers at the Fair to know how to treat and educate the people. I will not be a nurse by the time they return to Antigua, but I'll be considered a nursing student.

Now, I plan to work in a hospital/clinic after graduation and obtaining my RN license, but I also want to expand into helping in other parts of the world.

Are there any nurses on here who have gone to different countries to volunteer their services? How is the experience? Any advice? Would I be able to do both (right now I'm single with no children) or do you think I would be taking on too much?

Thanks.

Hey, just DO IT!!!! You will enjoy it hugely and never look back + you will love helping people less advantaged than yourself. There are a lot of Aussies volunteering overseas. We at St John volunteer in East Timor and Zimbabwe. Next year I have the opportunity to volunteer as an orderly in the Cocas Island hospital as an orderly whilst their sole orderly is on leave. Should be FUUUUN as well as helping out with folks. Upside [reward] is you get to see some pretty amazing places. DO IT while you are young.

Thanks! I'm really excited to go next year to start participating. Glad to hear of your opportunity in Cocas Island. I do feel it is rewarding for us and also for the lives we touch.

I've done Missionary work( Juarez, Mexico), but not medical, and I can just tell you that either way you help those people it will be VERY rewarding, and those memories will be forever in your heart. They love and are very thankful when being helped, you'll get many blessings your way by doing any kind of missionary work. I also want to do missionary work once I become a nurse, knowing I was there helping in a different way, I can't wait to experience that. There is not a greater feeling than helping others for nothing in return. God Bless, and like the above poster said, DO IT!!!

My DW and I (both RNs) volunteer once a month with a mobile clinic in Mexico. It's very rewarding. We see anyone who shows up, help a lot of people and they are extremely grateful. We live in Arizona so it's easy to do as a daytrip although the driving makes it a long day.
