New PCs and Windows 7 Hits Store Shelves

by CaptainPC Premium Member

The long wait is over. Brand new desktop and laptop designs loaded with Windows 7 became available to the public yesterday, October 22. Microsoft has placed a lot of hope in the new operating system. Microsoft’s reputation is on the line, and if Windows 7 does not redeem the Vista fiasco, at least in some measure, there could be some dark days ahead for the software giant.

I consider myself fortunate to be at Best Buy yesterday to check out the kick off of Windows 7. The closest Best Buy is a one hundred mile round trip for us. I must confess I did not go to all the trouble of making the drive just to go to Best Buy. I had other business in the same town, and it just happened to be Windows 7 release day.

What I witnessed yesterday was anything but a lukewarm acceptance of Microsoft’s latest offering. People flooded into the store to see the new play toys, and they were not disappointed. Almost every laptop and desktop on display was of a new design, and the prices were right for people looking for a good buy. Several of these people related that they resisted buying a Vista machine and had been waiting for Windows 7 before purchasing their new computer.

One gentleman remarked he was very happy to have returned his Vista laptop to the store of purchase to get full credit for it just two weeks ago. He intimated a strong dislike for Vista based on his experience with his former laptop. He went on to say it was horribly slow, and aggravating despite the fact it was powered by a dual core processor. He picked out the laptop he wanted and proceeded to check out. He mentioned in particular the UAC (User Account Control) that interrupted him almost every time he tried to do just routine menial tasks. The fact is there are around five areas in which Vista can be tweaked that make a world of difference in its performance. Once those areas are remedied, Vista is rock solid and a pleasure to use. Most users however do not want the frustration of having to tweak the OS to get their work done, and who can blame them. They want something that just plain works. Windows 7 may be just the ticket.

After looking over every PC in the store, and playing with Windows 7 for a while, I have to admit I am impressed with it. It is better than Vista; it looks good, and runs well. I saw more laptops and desktops going out the door than I have ever seen on any other day, including Christmas. Laptops were by far the biggest seller, but there was a sprinkling of desktops as well. I did not purchase anything, as I pre-ordered two upgrade disks of Windows 7 during the special offer period a few months back. I am going to upgrade my Toshiba laptop from Vista to Windows 7 when I receive my disks. I have been told they were shipped via express mail yesterday.

No offense to Apple Mac devotees, but the Apple rep in this Best Buy location yesterday looked a lot like the Maytag repairman.

How about you, did you hurry down to Best Buy to purchase that new Windows 7 computer, or did you greet the new release with a period of extended yawning?

I've been running an early release of windows 7 on my mac for about a month. It does seem to run pretty smoothly, and from what little I have used it, it is much better than vista was.

But I only use windows for a few programs, I've drank the apple Kool-Aid and become an apple convert in the past year, after 15 years of being a windows guy.

However, back to the topic at hand. I think Vista was a horrible black eye for Microsoft, and from my limited experience with windows 7, and most reviews I have read, I think most users will be pleased with it.

I ordered 2 Windows 7 upgrades a few months back and I'm glad I did .... the first upgrade was long but I had no problems - in fact, it was the smoothest upgrade I've ever done.

My laptop is running better than ever.

The next upgrade will be my main computer. That one is running XP Pro. I believe this will be a complete rewrite - I don't think I can upgrade to Windows 7 as I did with the vista laptop - but that's ok. The system was giving me a lot of problems - it's time for a major upgrade in both software and hardware.

I love my Mac but...

it's limitations on software availability is lacking. Then there's the conundrum of which machine should I buy for - Mac or Windows? Buying 2 versions (PC/MAC) of the same software is just too costly. For now, I'm sticking with Windows as my main computer.

( I do love running both Windows and Mac on the same machine. I wonder how Windows 7 runs on the Mac? )

I agree, buying two versions doesn't make sense. I've been running win 7 on my mac for over a month, and it seems to run just fine. I also love having both OS on my mac.

I have just now completed the basic installation of Windows 7 on my Toshiba Vista laptop. I did not do an in place upgrade installation, but opted for a custom clean install. While an in place upgrade from Vista works very well, upgrading from XP requires a custom clean install. My Vista was 32 bit and I wanted to use the 64 bit version of Win 7. I boosted the laptop to 4 GB of ram a few weeks ago in anticipation of the Win 7 release. I have very few of my apps installed at this point, but I can already see how Win 7 improves on Vista. I am very pleased.

I pre-ordered two copies of Win 7 back in June when it was offered at a great price. I received my copies last Saturday via express mail. As far as the second upgrade package is concerned, I plan on doing a dual boot install on my Win XP machine so I can keep XP for a few games that will not run on Win 7.

The idea of getting a Macbook or Macbook Pro has been very appealing to me. I would like to experience and learn the OS X system, and I would really like to dual boot it with Win 7. A Mac is on my next wish list.
