Chevy Trailblazers and Car Seats

by CTRN1

Hello!
I was wondering if anyone here with children has a 2002 Trailblazer?? We have one and are having a horrible time with the seatbelts and our 12week old's carseat. Specifically, the seat belts retract too tightly and flip the carseat on its side. Right now it is in place but not well, and im terrified to take it out since it took over an hour to put in and im not sure we can get it back to the same spot again. Chevy is not being helpful at all with the situation and it looks as though we might have to buy a new vehicle because of it. Has anyone else had problems with their trailblazer? or any oher vehicle? I am interested to hear any suggestions you might have as well.
Thanks a bunch in advance!!

I don't know about where you live but here the fire department will properly install any infant/child car seat. I have read that up to 85% of all car seats are improperly installed. There is a seperate metal piece that holds the belt in place on most seats that might help?
When my little ones were so small that I used the infant seats, the seats didn't fit. Parked my 5.0 untill they were big enough to sit forward and used Dad's conversion van.

Thank you for your suggestion. Unfortunately it was installed by a carseat check point and it still happened, and the locking clip is on but not doing much. The worst thing is its our only family vehicle, my husband has an older soft top wrangler, but its not safe for kids. Bummer!

what a bummer. I'd take it to the dealer next or perhaps buy another car seat that has a different style for securing in the seat and return it if it doesn't work. The manufacturer of the seat or vehicle should know about this (which ever is found to be the problem). Might prompt a recall. I hope you get it worked out.
Are you pulling the belt too tightly? Just a thought.

OK, I see you wrote that the belt auto recoils too tightly. Sounds like a problem with the Trailblazer. Take it to the dealer. You could also try installing your own seat belts or having someone else install a new set that are manually secured. Seat belts bolt to the floorboard under the carpet usually. Seems to me this is something Chevy should do for you though. I hope you find a safe solution for your baby soon. Another thought, could you use another seatbelt clip where the belt comes out of the recoil to stop it from tightening any further?
Our van has the old fashioned type seat belts and the infant seat would flip if I did it too tight. Definatly sounds like the problem for you. Call the dealer. Good Luck!

CTRN1, so how do you like the TrailBlazer?

Other than the problem with the car seat, how is the ride in a Trailblazer? How many people does it seat?

Thanks, mkue

We have the extended version which sits 7 adults and all the seats are very comfortable, and honestly I really love the truck, it really rides great and is nice to drive. But this whole situation has really changed my views of Chevy, as the dealerships and the main corporation has basically put us off with our problems. One thought though, if you are thinking of getting one, go for 2003 or newer, they have the LATCH system and ironically are found to be one of the easiest SUVs to use with carseats. If only we had known we would have waited for a newer version and not had this problem.

Marie- I just traded my truck in for an '03 Trailblazer. it's the smaller version. It rides like a dream, and is more comfortable, better on gas, and handles so much better than the extended cab. I test drove the Tahoe and it was like driving a school bus.

CTRN1- Maybe take the carseat with you and check out the '03 ? It is really popular around here.

Hmmmm.......

Do you have a reporter that does stories on "Consumer" related problems/issues, either with your local TV station or newspaper.

Sounds like you are close to exhausting your resources if the dealership or manufacturer will not assist you. I agree though, sounds like the seat belt is wound too tight, maybe they can adjust it.

Oooh, that reminds me...if you have a talk-radio station in your area, you might call in & mention the dealership by name & just how helpful they were to you.

I do like the idea about the "consumer" segments with local TV stations. They work wonders around here!

Good luck!
