Facebook

Hey, all. How many of you are on Facebook? Friends are suggesting I should get on board but I'm a bit wary, given some of the stories I have heard about invasion of privacy. Any comments?

I'm not sure what you mean about "invasion of privacy" because it basically is you putting what you want to put for all your friends to see. You can also control the settings on who sees what, and you control what you put on there.

I'm on Facebook and it's the PG-13 version of my life. I put nothing on there that I wouldn't want all my friends to see, my parents, people I work with and people I go to church with to see. My settings are such that people in Tampa Bay Network can see my stuff, so I know potential employers can look me up. My pollitical preferences, sexual prefernce, and religion are on my profile. If someone wants to use that against me so be it, because I don't want that job or them in my life.

What we can't control however, is what other people post. So if you're drunk throwing up in a commode at a party and someone snaps a picture on their i-phone they can instantly put it on their FB page for all the world to see. I'm glad there were no cell phones and FB when I was young and dumb. LOL

I'm on FB with my real name. I don't add people as friends if I don't want them seeing all my stuff - pics, status updates, etc. There area few people from work that can only see my pics, not my status updates because sometimes I vent about work.

About a year I've been on there and so far no big issues.

It depends on what you may want others to see and how much you know about the site
School sued for punishing teens over MySpace pix

Computerworld - Privacy advocates are applauding Facebook's willingness to shut down its controversial Beacon service as a part of a broader settlement in a class-action lawsuit against the company.
The move signals an overdue acknowledgement by the popular social-networking site of the need to give users more control over their personal data and how it is shared, they said....

...Facebook on Friday said that it was willing to shut down Beacon and create a settlement fund of $9.5 million to resolve a lawsuit filed against it in August 2008. The suit, filed in San Jose, alleged that Facebook and Beacon affiliates such as Blockbuster and Overstock.com had violated several privacy laws, including the Electronic Communications Privacy Act and the Video Privacy Protection Act, when they shared data about Facebook users with each other....

...For instance, a Facebook user's purchase of an item on a participating vendor's Web site was immediately broadcast to that user's friends ...

Go for it, Bushabo ! Quite a few of us are there... and I agree... don't post anything you don't want the world to know and you're fine!

I like it because I can keep up with my friends and family who live out of state, and I don't have to always send individual emails, but can post right there on FB, and send them messages right there as well.. including photos. And yes.. check out the :settings: and choose what you want and don't want there.

Hope you have a quiet day, my friend. When are we going to get a picture of your new ambulance???

I only recently joined Facebook and haven't seen any problems. One problem Tweety and Elvish touched on indirectly though is for those who may have one level of candor for All Nurses but a different level for Facebook. I remember Tweety mentioning something on here on AllNurses and then asking his friends not to comment on it on Facebook. I have different levels myself and was just commenting on it on another thread.

Anonymity can also be lost when posting in both places. Once I became friends on FB with Steph, and saw people commenting on her wall, I easily deduced who some of the people were that I knew on AN only by their user names. (Sorry, Elvish, but you're identity is safe with me; you too Tweety. )
