Fierce winds from the south, rattling my old windows and now big old flakes of snow in the sideways wind! Snow even blew in the office door between the door and the door jamb . ..

The electricity has flickered off and on twice. My radio is not getting good reception.

Darn!

Blech! Snow. We've been having a mild fall here. It's been in the 50s and 60s most of the week. Very wet yesterday though.

Re: the possibility of Autism, I'm in the information gathering stage of the game. His doc has more of a wait and see attitude at this point. I'm taking db's advice/direction with caution. His son has Aspberger's and he and dw saw some things in my ds the last time they came to town that they saw in their ds. He said they kept expecting him to outgrow certain behaviors and he never did. With a strong family history on both sides, I actually want ds evaluated. I also found out from dmil that they tried to dx my dh with "mild" autism back in the '70s and dh's parents never acted on it since he was able to function fairly well. Of course, this was the first dh heard of all this too. I don't see any harm in an evaluation. If there's something going on with ds other than delayed speech, I want to address it early. If there's not, that's good too. He goes to the Children's Institute in 2.5 weeks for speech and I'll see what they recommend. I also know that it takes awhile to be seen at Children's Hospital/WPIC to be evaluated by the child psychiatrist, so I'd like to get the ball rolling to be working out a plan over spring/summer before he goes to pre-school. If I were to call for an appointment today, I can almost be sure the soonest they would have available is in February. I can always cancel it if I find out he doesn't need it.

Oh, BTW, after I typed my last post, I was holding dd and bent to hug ds. She squirmed out of my arms and I dropped her on her head! It was the worst moment of my life. I felt her going and I couldn't get her back. Then I heard the hollow thud and screamed. I talked to the doc immediately. She seems okay so far except for the flat spot and goose egg on the back of her head. If there's more swelling than that or she becomes irritable, sluggish, nauseated, I'll take her to the ED for an x-ray. I keep thinking of Natasha Richardson though.

Oh sweetie . . I know that feeling. Our son fell from 6 feet flat on his face . .. . scary as heck.

They are stronger than we know - but yeah, watch for the listlessness or vomiting.

As to the other stuff - absolutely you can have him assessed. How old is he?

A great book that helped me a lot was "The Einstein Syndrome - Bright Children Who Talk Late".
http://www.amazon.com/Einstein-Syndr.../dp/0465081401

"The Einstein Syndrome is a follow-up to Late-Talking Children, which established Thomas Sowell as a leading spokesman on the subject of late-talking children. While many children who talk late suffer from developmental disorders or autism, there is a certain well-defined group who are developmentally normal or even quite bright, yet who may go past their fourth birthday before beginning to talk. These children are often misdiagnosed as autistic or retarded, a mistake that is doubly hard on parents who must first worry about their apparently handicapped children and then see them lumped into special classes and therapy groups where all the other children are clearly very different.
Since he first became involved in this issue in the mid-90s, Sowell has joined with Stephen Camarata of Vanderbilt University, who has conducted a much broader, more rigorous study of this phenomenon than the anecdotes reported in Late-Talking Children. Sowell can now identify a particular syndrome, a cluster of common symptoms and family characteristics, that differentiates these late-talking children from others; relate this syndrome to other syndromes; speculate about its causes; and describe how children with this syndrome are likely to develop"

Good morning all from the SUNNY desert. Another hot day looming:angryfire

Re the Autism-----my eldest daughter has 2 autistic girls 5&6 yo. They can be a real handful at times. There is fairly generous state and federal assistance available BUT only up to age 7 and we have to find the $2000 to get them each assessed [?]

Their dad has Aspergeres yet he holds down a good job and flies light planes!!

So all the best At the end of the day they are just our kids and we love 'em to bits.

First of all, Happy Birthday, Joe!
Well. The DON and Admin called me at 1:30pm today and I am fired. For being insubordinate during the morning managers meeting regarding a patient I had not sent out. (family and NP concurred with me and we were continuing to monitor...) Admin wants them to die in the hospital. And when I tried to explain, she took it as insubordination! A hell of a thing, after over 2 years as MDS, on-call, unit manager etc........Oh well....... Hope there is something to apply for in the Sunday paper. We ( mama and I) are only 2 or 3 weeks from being homeless. Prayers are appreciated!

Then. on the other hand......Life's a ***** then you die......

Good Evening I am finally getting my tail in to say GOOD MORNING LOL

Joe Happy Birthday is it today or tomorrow that is your special day?

Went off to see our PCP today and he still believes I am having Esophageal Spasms although he is unsure why my amylase is elevated during pain. I will be seeing the specialist soon so we shall see. I feel like we are finally getting somewhere and that I am not going crazy!

Got heaps done today, went on a visit today to assist the hubs with a patient that had so much pharmacopea. Poor ol' man had meds he was using that had expired in 2004-2006-2008, what a mess he had hoarded meds everywhere.

Hope you have all had a great day.

I'm so sorry. ((((BEDPAN76)))) I will keep you in my prayers. I hope you find something soon.

Happy birthday Joe.

I was a little bit of a late talker myself, NB. My uncle once told me, "You were kind of slow to start talking but once you did you wouldn't shut up!" I know the feeling about DD too. I was just telling someone the other day about the oldest boy burning himself on the woodstove when he was under my care.

Any room for an appeal/hearing??? (but, given how quickly the decision was handed over, and without hearing your version of what happened, nor giving any weight to those staff members who agreed and supported your decision -- maybe it's best not to go back. . .)
With a good track record behind you (any other warnings??), it sounds like Admin made a hasty decision they may regret.
Sometimes a scapegoat is assigned so "they" look good. :angryfire:
Saying prayers that you will find what you need, and soon.

Steph's responses have pretty much covered all the bases, IMO.
Sometimes kids are just that: KIDS, and they have their own timetable for doing things/reaching "milestones."

We did ONE case today!! wooooo-hoooooooo!
and I LEFT WORK 30 min early!!
Just a small little gift to myself . . .

Rehearsal tonight for a "shoot" in the studio tomorrow.
We're doing a few Christmas songs.
We usually shoot three 1/2-hr segments intact (only a break between segments, not between songs).
Tomorrow we're shooting about 10 individual seasonal songs, that the station can plug in to the programming schedule next month.
It will be nice to be able to set up each song, then record it, rather than recording/remembering 10 or 11 at a time!

Y'all have a good one!
