kitten care for humans

by canoehead Premium Member

I'm fostering a mother cat and her kitten for the humane society. This mum is such a sweetie, purrs and cuddles like crazy. Her kitten has just learned to walk and is venturing further and further away from mom. She'll even follow me if I cuddle her and then put her down on the floor.

My question is- they want the kitten on solid food by 6 weeks when she is adoptable. She is 4 weeks now, and won't even taste the canned stuff I put out. She's completely nursing. If she was mine I wouldn't rush her, eventually she will want regular food on her own. Unfortunately the younger she is when she hits the adoption stage the more likely she will find a home.

Anyone have tips on weaning?

There's a book called Kittens for Dummies!

I would not start w/canned food. Try mixing KMR (Kitten Milk Replacement) with baby food meats. Make a milk shake. You can also add a little rice cereal to make it thicker. Put that mess in a shallow dish like a pie plan and see if he's interested. Dot some on his paws and nose. Have your camera ready, you may get some very cute pictures!

If he's not interested, try again in 2-3 days. It's an "acquired taste"!

Ah, you're a strong man. There is no way I would be able to give them up. Good luck with the weaning. Sounds like you've gotten some pretty good ideas here.

And that's how we've ended up with nine cats. Ds's and dh (yeah, and me) COULD NOT, WOULD NOT give up the three that we acquired six years ago, and the one that wandered in three years ago, and the Mama that had four kittens a year ago. If you come to our house, expect chaos and cat hair.

You're a good person, canoehead, and to be applauded.

Thank you so much. They warned me at the humane society that the urge to adopt would be tough. I've already got five of my own. ( ) They are so beautiful, and the euthanasia rate is about 50% at this shelter- they didn't tell me but I did the math. I plan on writing a very complimentary information note on them both for petfinders, and will see if the adoption counsellor will call me back if they get but on the list.

I will check out the links and find some baby food tomorrow. An update; my little on turned her nose up at fish chowder broth. (milk, butter and fish juice from clams, oysters, etc). The other cats loved it!
