Great places to raise a Family?

Hi All!
Hubby & I are expecting our first. We're excited, financially wasn't good timing, but I guess it never is.
Unfortunately, we live in a fairly ghetto part of California, not somewhere I would really want to raise children. I was raised in California most of my life, but the nice areas are so expensive that I don't want to spend my entire life just barely getting by to ensure a safe neighborhood for my family.
The move will have to wait until I finish my Bachelors, which is about a year and a half away. I'm currently an RN working in Critical Care though I hope to move to Emergency eventually.
Anyway, I was figuring some of you more experienced nurses might know nice places to raise a family with a decent liveable salary. Area of the country is not an issue, the only places I'm not very fond of is very flat, desert regions. But, as it is now, family is first!
Thanks!

I don't blame you, I wouldn't want to live in CA...especially with kids. Well I'm not a nurse (yet) but I live in upstate NY, the winters suck but it's pretty in the fall. Anyway...good luck with wherever you decide to move! Oh and congrats!

I hear Seattle is one of the most livable cities and is pretty vibrant right now. Not sure about how family friendly it is.

Stay away from Florida because eduation is a low priority. Personally I love it here and would recommend it but for that.

Good luck.

Is it difficult for non common wealth nurses to immigrate to Oz? I imagine the educational requirements are different as well? I agree that Oz is a nice place to live. I have South African friends who jumped ship to live in Oz. One is a doctor and her husband in a B-tech paramedic (4 year degree in SA), who was able to transition into an advanced care paramedic position in Oz. However, American nursing education is all over the place.

OP, good luck. If you do not mind the cold, places like Wyoming are very safe.

We have nurses in Hedland from all over---Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, Nigeria etc. Look up www.rcna.org.au, they should be able to advise. I'm pretty sure most overseas qualifications are recognised with perhaps some ongoing training.

Hooroo Michael

Thanks to all for your suggestions. : ) I'll check out Australia. I'm finishing my BSN to help streamline my marketability so hopefully that will help.

First off, big Congrats!

Second - I'm a tad biased since I'm a native, but my vote is for Colorado. Much less expensive than California, but just as beautiful if not MORE beautiful. There's a misconception about the weather here, but believe it or not, we have more sunny days year-around than most areas of the country. When it snows, it melts fast. Besides, if you live outside of the foothills, the "bad" snowstorms are rare.

I've lived South of Denver (Littleton, Englewood, Colorado Springs) and now I live North of Denver (Broomfield/Westminster), and I love both areas. My husband and I just bought our first house (less than 275,000, but recently I've seen home prices dip toward 250,000) in Broomfield, and we LOVE it. Great place to raise a family.

Good luck!

I agree about CO....I visited a friend in Colorado Springs a few years back and it's very pretty there. I'm not into the urban setting but Denver was nice too.
