April 1 deadline!! Petition -- "Respect My Pro-Life Convictions"

by Liddle Noodnik Premium Member

I know there is another thread on this last posted March 4th, but this thread is specifically to guide those interested in signing a petition for Pro-Life nurses, doctors, and other health care providers. See http://beheardproject.com/

You only have until April 1st to sign the petition! Sorry I did not hear of this sooner.

The text on the site partially reads:

JOIN 39480 OTHERS
You have strong convictions, but President Obama says that doesn’t matter. He’s ready to rescind the Conscience Clause.

The Conscience Clause was implemented by former President George W. Bush to give physicians and nurses the choice to act according to their conscience — to not participate in abortion procedures if it conflicts with their personal convictions. If President Obama makes this damaging move, if he reverses the Conscience Clause, pro-life doctors and nurses will be forced into performing abortion procedures, despite their individual beliefs.

The announcement was made Friday, March 6, 2009. Since the official announcement was made, the public now has 30 days to file comments with the White House ... so we’ve got 30 days to make our voices heard at the White House... (has to be filed by April 8 so we don't have any time to speak of!!

At least tell the truth... It isn't about 'ABORTION.' Though that's a nice way to scare people into signing.

The Department of Health and Human Services' "provider conscience" rule currently allows doctors, nurses, pharmacies, health insurers or any other health care provider to deny access to birth control and emergency contraception or refuse to provide information about abortion, refuse to screen for HIV/AIDS or provide any other service that they find morally objectionable. The HHS rule is written so broadly that it allows any employee or volunteer to refuse to perform a job function -- regardless of the patient's needs.

This regulation invites ideology to intervene in sound medical practice. Information and services -- even those that could save a patient's life -- could be withheld without the patient even knowing they were available. There are no protections in the regulation to guard against situations where a refusal could result in serious injury or death.

The HHS regulation explicitly overrides a long-standing requirement that all providers using federal Title X family planning funds must offer patients non-directive counseling about all options related to their pregnancy. Also affected are the Maternal and Child Health Program and the Medicaid program which serve the reproductive health needs of 17 million women.
Tell the truth already...

Ideology doesn't belong in medicine or nursing. IF you don't want to do something you send them somewhere else. You DON'T withhold information and potentially make that choice for them.

The 'conscience Clause" was ordered late in the previous administration to go into effect on January 20, 2009. It applies to anyone employed in healthcare, not only professionals. It could be a secretary who does not believe in blood transfusions refusing to take off T&C orders or a housekeeper refusing to clean a room where a procedure objected to happens.

Below is part of a position of my professional association:

The California Nurses Association supports a woman's right to be informed of options regarding pregnancy, adoption, birth control and abortion so that she can make a truly informed decision of choice.

CNA/NNOC believes that women who decide to have an abortion are entitled to competent and compassionate nursing care.

This provision of nursing care is the major responsibility of the nursing profession in any area of health care.
However, nurses hold moral, ethical and/or religious beliefs that may compel them, in good conscience, to refuse involvement with abortions.

CNA supports the nurse's right to exercise this refusal without being subject to ridicule, coercion, censure or termination.

It is recommended that those who choose not to be involved notify their employers in writing in advance of a situation's occurrence.

Nurses have the right to expect their employers to describe policies and practices regarding abortion. Likewise, the employer has the right to determine a prospective employee's persuasion in this matter, not to penalize, but rather to facilitate exercise of choice.

It's not JUST about abortion Stanley, of course not. But it is inclusive. And more than that, federal funding is at stake. And what does the petition accomplish? It puts a hold on things, it fosters discussion, it tells the President that the whole country is NOT just nodding and cheering at his every move.

House Minority Lead John Boehner:

This is the third action taken by Washington Democrats in the past 38 days to weaken American rules that are meant to safeguard the sanctity of human life. It is an action that will hurt faith-based health providers and hospitals throughout our nation who are committed to caring for Americans at this critical time. It will also inevitably result in more abortions being performed nationwide.

On January 21, I and 114 other Republican Members of Congress sent a letter to President Obama urging him to drop his pledge to enact the so-called 'Freedom of Choice Act' (FOCA), which would overturn virtually all pro-life laws at the state and national level. To the dismay of millions of Americans, it is beginning to look like the Administration is intent on enacting FOCA incrementally - step by tragic step - through low-key legislative maneuvers and executive orders.

Ultimately it's like cooking the proverbial frog. Well no, there is no proverb lol... but you know what I mean. You put the froggie in some nice warm comfy water and slowly turn up the heat, and say nice froggy, this doesn't hurt a bit. Oh, it's "only" about this, it's "only" about that, til more and more rights are taken away. Obama can't just revoke this and revoke that w/o some discussion and w/o including his constituents on his decisions. No, we are going to make some noise. We will NOT be silent.

Yes he can...

Bush implemented this rule with nary a discussion of the American people.

People NOW have their rights infringed upon because they may not have access to other healthcare and get pushed into a decision NOT THEIR OWN because of a health provider's personal beliefs.

Make all the noise you want.

Obama has clearly stated and shown that he is systematically removing the influence of religion from science, healthcare and government...

Here's an idea. Don't want to perform an abortion? Don't work somewhere that you have to.

Before you know it, teachers are going to say they don't have to teach any science because it's against their religion. Poppycock... If the teacher wants religion in their teaching they teach at a private school... Simple.

Point in fact. Obama isn't attacking the rights at all.

He has said he wishes to ensure that health care providers that don't wish to provide certain services REFER the patients somewhere else.

Now, they don't even have to provide a referral.

Refusal to provide a referral is NOT your right. Refusal to PROPERLY inform and educate a patient is NOT your right.

Never was. Never will be.

LN simply posted this for pro-life nurses or nurses-to-be who are interested in signing the petition. If you are not interested in signing it Stan, then don't. No one is forcing anyone to do anything.

As she said "It puts a hold on things, it fosters discussion, it tells the President that the whole country is NOT just nodding and cheering at his every move."

Things have already been done in a rush w/o much thought or any reading. No harm in slowing down and looking more carefully at this.

1. Define "proper".

2. I will be glad to educate - can I also educate about God and ethics, morality, and prayer, creationism? Or can I only educate about approved topics? How many are left?

3. Can I also refer you to a church or a pastor?

4. I am pro-choice - I choose not to participate in things that God would condemn me for doing.

5. Are you telling me to be quiet, not to buck the system? We are training nurses to be silent and to follow "majority rules"? Are we going backwards here or what?

6. Whose rights are you willing to protect? Just those of the people you agree with?

7. Who gets to experience tolerance?

8. Again, let's discuss, not revoke. If it's broken, fix it; don't throw it out. Because it WILL come back.

I am not speaking "to" you necessarily Stan, I am speaking to the issue, it is so full of little ironies ... I can just see the anti-morality squad with their little fazers set on "stun", their night goggles on, as they seek out people who dare to worship, dare to object ... feels very Twilight Zone.

People fight against religion because they don't want to be controlled. But they end up being controlling, and ultimately being controlled themselves.

Informing them of ALL of their options.

If they wanted a priest they would go to church. You are there to deliver 'healthcare.'

3. Can I also refer you to a church or a pastor?
If you are fine being unprofessional and crossing the line. Sure I guess.

4. I am pro-choice - I choose not to participate in things that God would condemn me for doing.
Not participating is fine. Don't push it on others.

5. Are you telling me to be quiet, not to buck the system? We are training nurses to be silent and to follow "majority rules"? Are we going backwards here or what?
I never said be quiet. I said your protests are going unheard because America is sick of the 8 years of religious rule. Obama is against it. Shrug.

6. Whose rights are you willing to protect? Just those of the people you agree with?
Your rights only exist if they don't impose on others. As a vet that has actually DEFENDED your rights you really shouldn't be judging eh?

7. Who gets to experience tolerance?
Has nothing to do with tolerance. Strawman.

8. Again, let's discuss, not revoke. If it's broken, fix it; don't throw it out. Because it WILL come back.

Anti-morality squad? You saying that non-Christians don't have morals?

So much for tolerance eh?

Every time we give an inch the God squad tries to run EVERYTHING. Obama like the majority of America, including the increasing number of people fleeing the 'Christian' mantle, are tired of it.

It's over... Deal with it...

Talk all you like but Obama has made his intentions clear. All the Pro-Life agendas were shot down. Roe vs Wade stands. The POTUS is separating the church from the state.

Like the founding fathers intended.

ETA:

If I was off base then you wouldn't have had to make it sound like the rescinding of the law would force you to participate in abortions which it would NOT have.

Resorting to misinformation and exaggeration to scare people into what you want to do.

Your actions betray you.

I think it is valid to post a link for those who want to participate.

In the political forum there will be political discussion.

I am pro life. I work CCU/SICU/ICU and cath lab.
I do ask patients of they want a chaplain or their place of worship called.
If asked I pray with a patient and/or family.

But cannot "refer"

I think a social worker should present all options. Adoption, family placement for the child, and single parenthood.

I know an RN whose family threw her out as an 18 year old senior in HS because she was pregnant.

Nuns took her into the convent. she graduated and attended an ADN program.
She does a lot for them, cares for those who need it. And they care for her lovely daughter after school when she is at work.
