Bearing Witness to the Fallen

Ban lifted, media witness solemn return of fallen service member

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090406/...tagon_war_dead

It is hard to watch, but if the family agrees, bearing witness is a sign of respect. Acknowledging their deaths is important. It does not have to be a political statement though some will say it is so. I feel a terrible sadness when I hear about these deaths but seeing the coffins hits me right in the gut, and it should. I feel so very sorry for his family.

I think we should ALL see the soldiers that day in service.

It should be shown right during the middle of the news.

Not as a political statement like indigo said but for everyoneto acknowledge that someone died fighting in their Army. That an American soldier is no longer with us.

Like how they did at the beginning of the war listing the names and photos of deceased servicemen.

Even if you don't know them, a quick remembrance, a thank you or a solo moment of silence is the least we can do.

They deserve our respect.

It it were MY brother, I would sure want all of America to know what he did for them, whether they have personally sacrificed anything for this senseless war or not.

It's my firm opinion that the only ones truly fighting these wars are the servicemen/women and their families.

"War has real consequences."

That is all I have to say about that.
I've said plenty about the matter before...

Yes, they deserve our respect, and our thanks for giving that "last full measure". But the thanks shouldn't be reserved just for the fallen. All who are serving/have served deserve our thanks. Thank you to all who read this who fit this desription. Thank you Stanley.

This reminds me of what one of my nsg school professors said:
Statistics are real people with the tears wiped away.

Someone posted this a long time ago and I still have it. I think it still fits.

And please God let us not forget the ones for whom the battles still play in their minds.

Stan, I have seen that video numerous times and it never ever fails - I am always weeping before it's halfway through. Thanks for posting it, buddy.

Everybody posting in this thread should read Final Salute by Jim Sheeler. Ditto for the weeping - I cried through every page but it is so worth it. These are real people with real lives that are sacrificing everything for us, whether we sacrifice a damn thing for them or not.
