my first response, was that he was being extremely respectful.
(actually, it is still my response.)

not a display of weakness at all.
and look at their smiles...
obviously no offense taken.

If Obama wants to make a contribution to that effort, so be it.

With Central America still devastated by what was just a big rainstorm in the US, billions of people in the world living on less than a dollar a day, and people dying of preventable diseases all over the world, I just can't fake outrage over whether the President bows to Akihito or to Angela Merkel or Donald Duck. I just don't care.
would you care if he bowed to Hugo Chavez? Moammar Khadaffi? Amadinejad? Castro? BIn Laden?

What would it for you to care?

I certainly hope our days of claiming superiority to these monsters isn't over!

I think you're presenting a far-fetched scenario, but the answer is still no. I don't care.
That's not by any means apathy, nor an endorsement of anything those guys have said/done. I'm simply making the point that I live my life so far outside the rules of the Empire, it doesn't (and won't) change my life one bit who bows to whom. Power has corrupted them all and we are fooling ourselves if we think our Caesars are any less corrupt or any more kindhearted than any other just because they're ours. Not when Madeline Albright goes on record as saying starving Iraqi children to death (sanctions) to punish Saddam Hussein was 'worth it'...that's just one example and a bit OT. Would you like more?

That's probably not the answer you wanted, but there you go.

'we' can certainly appear invincible, less the bullying facade.
true confidence commands respect and even apprehension...
whereas cockiness elicits defensiveness, aggression, disdain.
we, the u.s. of a., display more of the latter than the former.
if we were truly all that, we wouldn't have this need to be so darned intimidating.
confidence is quiet.
'we' have much to learn in terms of diplomacy.
perhaps obama will teach us a thing or two.
bow away, mr. president.

oh, and iteachob, i knew heyjude was being facetious.

Oh for heaven's sake.

I'm talking about the new world players that could be our allies, or could just leave us behind because they don't need us...which is what some countries are starting to do: China, Brazil, India, Russia, and of course our long standing political allies like Japan the second biggest economy in the world.

I'm not saying we should bow down and kiss other countries butts either. But having protocols and "miss manners" showing us what a tough guy we are might not be the best approach either.

Also, there's a difference between a customary "bow" and "bowing down to someone". Mr. Obama did not "bow down" and show weakness. Of course I just spent a week in India putting my hands in prayer and slightly bowing, as a way of greeting people I was meeting for the first time. I certainly didn't take this as I was "bowing down" to them showing them their superiority or over me.

http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-jingoism.htm

What is Jingoism? ...

... When political rhetoric is heavily influenced by jingoism, it usually appeals to nationalistic sentiments, encouraging good patriots to agree with the views promoted. It may also be very simplistic, eliding complex issues in favor of basic propaganda. Citizens of nations who are preparing to go to war may see a fair amount of jingoism on display, especially if the war is hotly contended amongst citizens and politicians.

What gets me is the ignorance and how little people really know how the world works and what simple displays of submission or weakness or even what some would consider mannerrs but others do not, has at the level of politics and power that the president works at. A simple bow sends a message to people that he does not consider himself or his country as equals to the people he is bowing to. Also why do we have to adopt their customs as some people imply weh it is not our custom. What is so wrong with our customs. They have served us well for over 200 years. I am so tired of American apologists saying how bad we have behaved. I say we have not beghaved badly, but other countries have and I know that I am not the only one.

I care how he shows off as our leader and what he does.

on a side note what the heck is with him and all those "shout outs" with pointing at the person he is giving the shoutout to? I saw the speech in that he gave in Elmendorf and the shoutout he gave there. Is he trying to show he has "street cred"? That really to me is not something I want to see our president do. Have a little class and acknowledge them in a bit more formal manner.
