I think it's excellent that folks discuss topics, share opinions and express their thoughts. It's how we learn and become more enlightened. Sometimes the opinion of the majority isn't necessarily what's right. And sometimes the minority opinions might need tweaking! But... I will always defend anyone's right to hold their opinions.
I also believe if we walk together long enough and talk together long enough ... eventually we'll come to understand each other. I read that somewhere a long time ago, but don't remember where or by whom.

Good point.

this reminds me of some of the reactions i get, when i address someone as ma'am or sir, regardless of age.
for me, it's a sign of respect, whereas plenty of others are insulted.
I have no problem with this form of address. I agree, it's polite and certainly do not view it as the person saying it being "less then" or subservient.

I guess there's a fine line perhaps between showing respect and showing respect without subservience?

Either way ... it makes for an intersting debate and to read others opinions on the subject.

well, seeing that these "protocols" were of republican origin, i can understand how you would interpret any deviations, as incorrect.
still doesn't make it so, however.

I didn't mention "republican protocols".

I decided to do as you did and google "Obama bow" to see what was out there.

I linked the New York Times, The LA Times, The AP . . . .not in an way, shape, matter or form . . . friends of Republicans.

The articles mentioned other gaffs by other presidents, including many Republicans (Nixon, Bush, etc.). And the NYT chastised Clinton in 1994 for "almost bowing".

So, that is why I said: "Many of the articles I read DID mention other criticisms of other presidents for not knowing the correct protocol."

I didn't mean a Republican protocol . . I didn't even know there was such a thing. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

As Grace has mentioned - there are many ways to look at this. We all come from different perspectives.

I can see how bowing would look subservient.

When I was in Vietnam, we were taught prior to going ways not to offend the Vietnamese people.

One of the things they forgot was NOT to clap in church . .. :imbar There was a group of young Vietnamese children who sang and they were so awesome that at the end we clapped and the doctor immediately tried to "shush" us.

yeah, we're misunderstanding ea other's posts.

i googled the origins of u.s. protocols and found out they were constructed and implemented under hoover's administration...
meaning, their origins were of a republican distinction.

i wonder if it would have made a significant difference, under a democratic admin.

I doubt it . . . I think there were certain things that folks agreed on way back then. Even Dems and Reps

As to protocols, I looked it up too. Hoover was elected in 1928.

http://www.state.gov/s/cpr/c15634.htm

"The State Department first appointed a full-time protocol officer in 1916 and established the Office of the Chief of Protocol on February 4, 1928. In 1946, the President commissioned the State Department's Chief of Protocol to also carry the title "Chief of Protocol of the White House." Since 1961, the Chief of Protocol has been commissioned an Ambassador, requiring the President's nominee to be confirmed by the Senate."

http://www.state.gov/s/cpr/93591.htm

"Deans of the Diplomatic Corps: 1893 To Present. . ."

I'm sure there were protocols prior to Hoover. I don't think it had much to do with the party - I'll bet it was more just an acknowledgment of the differences between countries and it probably started in 1776.

Actually it goes back to the beginning of time . . . . attempts at getting along started when Adam and Eve were kicked out of the Garden.
