I know what you mean - I am not a country girl, didn't grow up on a farm and so people assume things about me too and use lots of negative terms regarding "rednecks" around me when I am in the "big city" (or posting on my local paper's forum).

I just look at them and say "I'm married to a really nice redneck".

And then there are the times when people make negative remarks about being a nurse - "emptying bedpans, wiping butts".

"Lesser minds and weaker spirits might clamor for a new office down the hall. But that would only create the illusion that we do not share the same universe. The truth is, sir, that whether you were in Hong Kong and I in Saskatchewan or you in Miami and I in Beirut or I in Karachi and you in Kenosha, we would still disagree about everything under the sun; we would still orbit, as implacable opposites, the eternal unity at the center of all things, that silent, infinitely dense nucleus of existence that encompasses you, me, the Dred Scott Decision, Heidi Klum, the Harlem Globetrotters and the latest and most abstruse ruminations on string theory.
"That is the sum of all I have to say to you: I disagree with everything you say, do and think, yet I admit that without you, I myself would not exist.

"Therefore, I simply say, Good day, sir. Good day!"
Then, shoulders back, head high, you enter your office and slam the door loudly, well, fully, with vigor but not malice.

When I was married to my first husband, a bunch of us "doctors' wives" used to get together with our kids once a week. I'll never forget one woman who was going on about what an "interesting" bunch we were: one woman was a dentist, one was a social worker, another a pharmacist, two were teachers, and woman saying this had done events planning at a large university before becoming a SAHM. She went on to say that "we're all so interesting and there isn't a nurse among us."

I looked her straight in the eye and said, "Gee, that's funny. I thought you knew I was a registered nurse."

The look on her face was priceless. Dang, that felt GOOD!

Be careful whom you disrespect---they may be standing right in front of you.

Hmmmm. I hear all kinds of remarks about 'illegal immigrants' and the backpedaling I see when I tell people I'm married to a really nice one is funny to watch. "I didn't mean your husband. I hope you guys get your stuff straightened out..."

Once my 'Joe-McCarthy-was-a-liberal' dad got a phone call from some PAC or another: "Sir, do you think we need to build a wall between the US and Mexico?" Him: "Well, my son-in-law is Mexican and I like him here." Her: "Uh...uh..well- have a nice day." Click.

Me, too.

A somewhat related story ...

My son's dad did not know much about his father, he was raised by the African American side of his mother's family.

Charles was prejudiced against Cape Verdeans and people from the Azores, many of whom were as African-looking as he is. Cape Verde and the Azores were colonized by the Portuquese centuries ago and the people from there identify as Portuguese Europeans and Portuguese remains their first language.

It came to pass that Charles moved to Cape Cod and started having a problem with the Portuguese community there.

Then he found out that his father met his mother during cranberry season there, and that his father was Cape Verdean.

He was horrified ... spent an hour on the phone with me freaking out over it. I fell out laughing!:roll

Take home message to my son ... be careful who you trash ... you might be one.

Heron--I LOVE Cape Verde!! I especially like it when people know where the heck it is, have even heard of, etc... lol
I literally hold some of my fondest memories from time spent there for work(in a previous life)
Great lesson as well..

Big Portuguese-speaking community in Massachusetts, mainly on the Cape and the old fishing ports.
