Food for thought

by heron Platinum Member

This one's intense ...

Conservatives, hold your fire and read it through ... it doesn't get to the point until the very end ... worth the stress, IMHO ...

That is too long of an answer to give someone who is irritating you.

I'd simply ask the bigwigs to do an inservice on leaving politics, religion, etc., out of the work place.

Because I'm sure the author's viewpoint irritates the crap out of the guy he is complaining about.

And imo the guy he is complaining about is not a true conservative.

He is just an irritating loud mouth.

On the other hand . . .this reminds me of allnurses and the political and religious threads we post on and how we've become more respectful as we've come to know each other.

Probably haven't changed many minds - but we get along.

And most of us would not have read a post that long, detailing all the stuff in the rebuttal.

Short and sweet.

Interesting.

I have worked with people who do not see anything wrong with getting into LOUD discussions about religion and politics at the workplace. It doesn't matter if I agree with them or not. I don't think such discussions are appropriate at work. I have heard people go on and ON about their brand of "Christianity" and how only their church has the right answer. I overheard one woman try to convert someone else to her religion at work and tell someone else to start reading the Bible to find all the answers in life. And regarding politics, I've heard people say that if this person or that person is elected, America as we know it will cease to exist.

One woman with whom I worked was extremely vocal about her opposition to Barack Obama when he was nominated for President. Instead of counting narcs at the change of shift, she went on and on (AND ON) about her feelings about the election. She was so loud, so rancorous and so in-my-face that I got a headache listening to her. She also had a voice that carried and I was surprised she hadn't awaken any of the residents with her tirade. Of course, she told me all this because she "knew" I felt the same way. (She apparently had not seen the bumper stickers on my car...) I felt trapped like a rat in a hole. I could not get away from this woman until finally it was time for her to clock out and go home.

You know, on her own time, this woman would have had every right to say what she thought. But it was totally inappropriate for her to get so wired up and start ranting and raving about politics on company time---especially at change of shift!

I think the smartest thing I did was to request to be off Election Night, not only because I wanted to watch the results with my family but also because I wanted to avoid the rancor I knew I'd hear from some of my co-workers. Who needs that kind of angst when nursing is already stressful enough?

Looks like we are all in agreement that this is inappropriate at work - by anyone.

I think though - if we are bothered by it we just need to speak up.

There were two nurses on pm's who continually talked about their sex life - with and without partners

What kinds of movies they watched, what kind of devices they bought, brought one device to work and used the tele batteries to show how it worked, how they helped their dog enjoy himself (I am not kidding) . . . .:imbar

BUT . . . we put up with it . .. until finally someone talked to the supervisor and she came down hard on them both.

People who are loud and irritating at work - just need to hush and we need to not take it.

I agree with all of you, with one exception. I think it's appropriate for laborers to talk about organizing at work. Just briefly mention it to get a feel for anothers reaction, and then decide to meet elsewhere if the case calls for it.

But, as for political discussions and the like, it's work, not debate or rhetoric class. A little friendly banter is fine, but the purpose of going to work is to.. work.

The example by the OP about the obnoxious attorney---not only was he disruptive to co-workers, he also might have mightily p*****d off a few clients. Very bad form.

I remember why my co-worker thought I would agree with her political views; she knew my husband was in the Guard and made the assumption that all military people are conservative. I think eventually my silence spoke volumes---that and my car.

Steph---about those two nurses---I am no prude but EEEEEUUUUUWWWWWWW! What is wrong with people? Did they talk like this where patients could overhear them?

I really hate that. This isn't exactly related to political views, but I've had a few people use racial slurs around me, I suppose they thought I would reciprocate their beliefs, they were mistaken.

I've experienced that as well. I thought it was incredibly rude and ignorant for a nurse to express negative views toward Hispanics, especially when there were several Hispanic CNAs on staff.
