I had heard bits and pieces of this story, and I know there are a lot of nasty people out there, but this really is beyond the pale and to have it printed in a foreign paper ( The Vancouver Sun): really makes our country look good.
"A typical street whore." "A bunch of ghetto thugs." "Ghetto street trash." "Wonder when she will get her first abortion."
These are a small selection of some of the racially-charged comments posted to the conservative 'Free Republic' blog Thursday, aimed at U.S. President Barack Obama's 11-year-old daughter Malia after she was photographed wearing a t-shirt with a peace sign on the front.
The thread was accompanied by a photo of Michelle Obama speaking to Malia that featured the caption, "To entertain her daughter, Michelle Obama loves to make monkey sounds."
... Moderators of the blog left the comments - and commenters - in place until a complaint was lodged by a writer doing research on the conservative movement, almost a full day later. ... "They make me sick .... The whole family... mammy, pappy, the free loadin' mammy-in-law, the misguided chillin', and especially 'lil cuz... This is not the America I want representin' my peeps," wrote another. After attention from other blogs, the thread was suppressed and placed under review, but before long it was returned to the site intact, and attracted a new series of racial slurs when the original complaint email was posted publicly to the site, with the sender's email address intact. http://shrunklink.com/csks
Also, before people start comparing it to what people have said about Palin and her kids, while I do believe that all children should be off limits, the Obamas have been very carefull in mostly shielding their children from the spot light. They were not constantly dragged out into public during the campaign, they have made very limited appearances since the inaguration -- my understanding is that when the president attends Malia's soccer games the press is told to keep their camera on him, not to shoot pictures of the kids. The big special at the White House, when asked to talk w/the kids, they were refused. They are doing eveything possible to protect these 8 and 11 year olds, and now we see the reason why.
I am so sorry for these children, although it's not that out of line from what other children of color have to put up with all the time -- think of those 60 kids who were kicked out of the pool they paid to use in Pennsylvania last week.

Re: How can anyone condone such hate?
The racial slurs just make me sick.
Right after the Democratic convention, my husband and I had coffee in a local cafe with a retired physician who lives in our small town. The man proceeded to tell us---I warn you this is ugly---that America could not elect "that boy" to be president. :angryfire
I walked out. I wasn't going to scream at him or point out his prejudice. But I could not take his bigotry.
It's been about a year since that incident and that man and I are civil to each other---but I won't forget.
At our county fair, about the same time last year, I was looking at an old church preserved on the fairgrounds. Started up a conversation with an elderly man who said that if the election doesn't go "the right way", our country would be headed to hell. I asked him what he meant by "the right way". He looked shocked and said, "Well, as long as that Muslim doesn't get elected." That time I didn't walk away. I informed him that not only was Obama a Christian, he was of the same denomination to which I belong.
I just don't understand prejudice against anyone for their color, country of origin, religion, sexual preference, age. Don't these people who marginalize others understand that someday they, too, will be marginalized, if only because of their advancing age?
And Cherybaby, I am so sorry that anti-Semitism prevents you and your family from celebrating the holidays any way you wish. An old friend who is Jewish has related stories similar to yours. There are no words to describe the horror of anti-Semitism. :angryfire:angryfire:angryfire

Re: How can anyone condone such hate?
Two of my cousins in a RED state had the opportunity to campaign door to door for the Obama-Biden campaign. It was the first time a Democratic presidential campaign had an office in town since 1960. This is a town with , I think, mostly truly good people.
Paired up with an out of state volunteer local citizens went door to door. They were welcomed in. Most people thought he was Muslim and believed that is a terrorist religion.
My cousins explained that he is Christian, listened, and answered questions.
The mosy common sentiment was that they would, of course, vote Republican. But after learning more would respect him if he became President.
I doubt most of them have ever known a Muslim. When I lived there nearly everyone was Baptist, Methodist, Catholic, or Jewish. Now there are MANY new churches of many Christian denominations.

Of course there's no chance that the comments were planted to create a false story about right wing racism.
