New taxes for some (including me)

WASHINGTON – The typical family would be spared higher taxes from the House Democratic plan to overhaul health care, and their low-income neighbors could come out ahead.
Their wealthy counterparts, however, face big tax increases that could eventually hit future generations of taxpayers who are less wealthy.
The bill is funded largely from a 5.4 percent tax on individuals making more than $500,000 a year and couples making more than $1 million, starting in 2011. The tax increase would hit only 0.3 percent of tax filers, raising $460.5 billion over the next 10 years, according to congressional estimates.
But unlike other income tax rates, the new tax would not be indexed for inflation. As incomes rise over time because of inflation, more families — and more small business owners — would be hit by the tax.

I am going to end up paying $300,000 dollars a year MORE in personal taxes a year if those goes thru. My effective tax rate will be OVER 50%. TELL ME HOW THAT IS GOOD? Just because I have worked hard and made money by working 80+ hours a week and for the last year and suceeded despite the economy and government rules that are totaly insane and idiotic. And despite keeping 3 high school graduates (no college at all) making each $104,000 a year, I still get to pay a 32% increase in personal taxes and a possible increase in further taxes. And for anyone thinking I am living high on the hog, guess again. I did buy a new house recently but the one I bought is only worth 200,000, an increase of only 50k over my other one and I am owner financing the old one to one of my employees and his wife and kids so they can get into home ownership. I send 8 relatives to college in the Philippines, I support my 93 year old mother, and I have loaned money at very low intrest to some friends businesses that needed money to surivive. Tell me I am rich...get real. :angryfire :angryfire

you are spending/sharing your money most generously, for sure.

aren't you fortunate in making an income, that enables you to do what you're doing?
that's the difference, for me.

i've read other posts from members who also complain, while they talk about the new cars they buy, paying for college for their kids/themself, eating out frequently...whatever/however it is they spend.

i do believe that many would love to be able to send their kids to college.
i do believe that many would love to buy a bigger house or a newer car.
heck, i believe there are many who'd give their right arm to even have a car or an apt they could afford so 10 kids don't have to share one bedroom.
i am also quite sure that many would love to be able to afford healthy, nutritious food vs living on pasta and fruit punch.

i am truly not concerned about those who earn enviable salaries while crying poormouth.

now i'll go read the article.

So like all things this needs tweaking....It should be indexed against inflation so the tax rate reflects underlying economic growth...

Pretty cavalier of you. A 50 % tax rate is RIDICULOUS. This is straight up redistribution of wealth.

Yet Eisenhower's highest tax bracket was way higher than 50. Just for a bit of perspective.

Does that make it okay?

A pretty famous Democrat (JFK) didn't think so.

If you're going to be paying $300,000 in taxes a year, then in my eyes you're rich.

The article states "The top marginal income tax rate now is 35 percent, on income above $372,950. Obama wants to boost the top rate to 39.6 percent in 2011 by allowing some of the tax cuts enacted under former President George W. Bush to expire." As a single person with no depedents and no deductions that's about what I pay now. Which is a lot, but where are you seeing you're going to pay 50% in taxes.

A 50% tax on wealthy people will NEVER EVER fly in America. Sweden perhaps, America never. Relax.

I'm not a Republican or a Democrat so it makes no difference to me who thinks what.
Just making the point that the 'horrible taxes' Obama wants to enact/reenact are not the highest this country has seen.
