Pot legalization gains momentum in California

SAN FRANCISCO — Marijuana advocates are gathering signatures to get at least three pot-legalization measures on the ballot in 2010 in California, setting up what could be a groundbreaking clash with the federal government over U.S. drug policy.

At least one poll shows voters would support lifting the pot prohibition, which would make the state of 40 million the first in the nation to legalize marijuana.

Such action would also send the state into a headlong conflict with the U.S. government while raising questions about how federal law enforcement could enforce its drug laws in the face of a massive government-sanctioned pot industry.

The state already has a thriving marijuana trade, thanks to a first-of-its-kind 1996 ballot measure that allowed people to smoke pot for medical purposes. But full legalization could turn medical marijuana dispensaries into all-purpose pot stores, and the open sale of joints could become commonplace on mom-and-pop liquor store counters in liberal locales like Oakland and Santa Cruz.

Frankly I think we should take the Westmoreland solution declare victory and get out of this part of the drug war....

Decriminalizing the possession of cannabis for recreational/medical use of less than an ounce would take a lot of the pressure off our law enforcement budgets and court systems.

It already is commonplace in liberal locales . . . Remember my story about the 18 year olds pulled over for speeding by my CHP nephew and found with pot AND an Rx for it? There is an infamous doc in Santa Cruz, well-loved for his prescribing habits.

What's the big freaking deal? Legalize it already. I'd vote for legalization in my state.

I can't get over the amount of young adults that I know who are put in jail for pot possession. They are clogging up our system with nonsense crime. Most of the jails here in Florida are housing minor drug offenses. In the interim, people who commit robbery are getting second and third chances out in society. We had a situation here recently in my county where two kids went to PRISON for growing 5 pot plants. Prison? Really? There are people in my county with 2-4 DUI's under their belts. They're still on the road with suspended licenses. These kids weren't distributing. They were growing for recreational use. Judge threw the book at them. One year with early release in 6 months.

Not a pot smoker. Never have been even back in my teen years...but I really don't have a problem with someone smoking in the confines of their own home. Should be treated the same as alcohol as far as I'm concerned. Do what you want in your own home...but driving under the influence is out of the question.

Steph - Are you near the Bay area? My husband is working out there...and he told me that he sees people smoking pot in the street...no different than if they were smoking cigarettes! LOL He got a real kick out of that.

Told me he wished he had lived there when he was a teenager! Silly man!

The war on drugs is a significant source of revenue for the law enforcement establishment. They are essentially the 'legal gang' in the drug trade business, with armor, weapons, and helicopters, and all kinds of toys to employ and entertain themselves with while extorting a revenue base from the taxpayer.

California should legalize it, and regulate the crap out of it like they do to everything else such as emissions, water distribution, and utilities (well, except the lack of regulation for illegal immigration).

Actually, they should decriminalize it and let free enterprise take care of all that money.

It would certainly boost their tourism! What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas but what happens in California is ..um...I forgot.

Actually, I agree with this. Is smoking more marijuana going to make the majority of Californians goofier?
