Report: 237 millionaires in Congress

by herring_RN allnurses Guide

Two-hundred-and-thirty-seven members of Congress are millionaires. That’s 44 percent of the body – compared to about 1 percent of Americans overall….

…Some lawmakers have profited from investments in companies that have received federal bailouts; dozens of lawmakers are invested in Wells Fargo, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs and Bank of America. …

Thankfully my congressman isn't one of them.......Tim Walz is a HS teacher/retired SGM of the guard.

Until there are some sort of limits set on how much money is "needed" for campaigning we're likely going to hear the same story.

The candidate who can outspend his rival has more chance of winning.

I think the thought that corporations are people whose freedom of speech is limited by campaign finance limits harms us all.

The people who work for the corporation have rights but why can a corporation limit our freedoms because they donate the most?

I think the OP refers to personal wealth, not to campaign funds which are, theoretically, separate.

I am a)not surprised and b)still convinced that money takes care of money, regardless of party affiliation.

Corporations that make money and then some off misery, ie; denying health care, producing dangerous drugs that have dubious FDA approval, private corporations in Iraq, companies allowed to pollute and have cancerous drugs, Corrections Corporation of America just disgust me.

The fact that it's lucrative to have Americans die because corporations have access to better lawyers than sick people, or that the guy caught with illegal drugs has to plea bargain because he has to make do with a court appointed lawyer sickens me.

Liberty and Justice for whom exactly? Those with the biggest bank accounts.

I agree that this is about personal wealth and not campaign promises . . .however just a thought about the latter - it entirely up to the politician. He/She can say no to $ $

I think they should serve a term or maybe two and then skedaddle out of Washington. Go back to their hometowns and start a new job or go back to their old one.

Career politicians are part of the problem.

Yeah, they can but they don't. So, some reform needed, no?

Why not hold them to a high standard that the rest of us try to live by? Why not expect high class and honorable behavior?

I dunno . . .seems like that the idea of reforming means something like instead of expecting your children to behave, we take all the obstacles out of their way so they are never ever tempted.

Doesn't that just make them grow up to be weak?

When the rest of us do something immoral we go to prison. Did Ted Kennedy? Scooter Libbey? Tom Delay? Oliver North? Bill Clinton? Nope, because they all had money and lawyers.

You can see breaking the law is a bipartisan effort.

So, no need for malpractice laws in nursing then because we should all be held to a high standard that other people are expected to try to live by? Hell, lets not lock up the oxycontin in a pyxis. Lets have them sitting around on the counter because we're all more professional than that.

C'mon, have a better argument.
