My mother died in Italy.
The nurses were so exceptionally kind to her and to my Dad.
They always found someone who could speak English.
Made phone calls for him. Helped is so many ways.
Those who did not know English shoved caring through eye contact, facial expression and body language.
Tragic as it was for my family I was proud of the nursing profession. What Pat Benner calls the 'compassionate stranger'.

I have no idea whether there is a law requiring a translator but always someone was there when needed.

Interestingly enough we had someone recently that didn't speak the language at all. It was interesting trying to communicate with the patient.

I used to do international medevac. We went to Rome to repatriate a sweet elderly American who had fallen and broken her hip while on vacation. The first thing she said went we entered her hospital room was, "thank God, please get me out of here."

When I told her I needed to speak to a nurse to get paperwork and a report, the patient said, "Good luck finding someone, I was fortunate if I saw a nurse more than once or twice a day." (paraphrase)

I did feel otherwise, however, that the Italians were the nicest people I ever encountered overseas...and it didn't matter where in Europe or the Caribbean I encountered Italians; they were always the nicest. I noticed that while some Europeans tended to obsess about the things they didn't like about America, Italians loved to talk about the things they DID like about America.
