12 dead, 31 injured in shooting at Fort Hood Texas

Apparently the main shooter used two handguns. It is not yet known if these were Army-issued or civilian weapons. The main shooter was killed. There are two other suspects. All were soldiers.

The shooting occurred at the base's Soldier Readiness Center, where soldiers who are about to deploy or those who are returning undergo medical screening.

My husband, a National Guard chaplain, often assists with such screenings.

When is the violence going to STOP?

Me too - it said the shooter was a psychologist or psychiatrist. I realize though that the news at first is probably not very accurate.

. . "A defense official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said Hasan was a mental health professional — an Army psychologist or psychiatrist . .

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_fort_hood_shooting

"US Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas told FOX news: "I do know that he has been known to have told people that he was upset about going (to Iraq)."

Two other soldiers were in custody, base officials said, amid indications that the attack may have been premeditated and well-organized.
Military officials said that Maj. Hasan was a psychiatrist who had been recently promoted to major and transferred to Fort Hood from Washington's Walter Reed Medical Center. Maj. Hasan's professional specialties included post-traumatic stress disorder, combat stress and other emotional issues common to the troops implicated in earlier incidents of military fratricide.

So very scary and sad.

Thanks for the link, Steph.

It is sobering to realize that he was a psychiatrist and specialized in PTSD and combat stress. Maybe the stories he heard from other soldiers increased his own stress and made him even more anxious about deployment. Often, those who are supposed to provide support get no support for themselves. DH has known many messed-up chaplains who had problems after deployment. Heck, he's had his own issues with PTSD and was not sure for a while if he could even function again in civilian ministry. Fortunately, DH is the kind of person who is upfront about his struggles and does not hesitate to seek peer support and/or counseling when necessary. But often those who are in caregiving roles do not take the time to acknowledge their own pain and fear.

To think that this bloke was actually treating others for mental health issues and PTSD!

No matter what ... this is just shocking and very very sad.

This is just so sad. This war is taking a toll on so many and in some very violent ways. I hope Dr King's Dream becomes a reality very very soon! Give peace a chance!

I am soo sad that this has happened. I am from Ft. Hood and was very worried about my friends and family in that area. We are not stationed there at this time. We moved about a year ago from there. I just can't believe this has happened. It breaks my heart that our soldiers now have to worry about their own people when on post and about to deploy. My husband has been deployed 3 times and it has been really hard on him. I do hope the military will do something to help with the stress of a deployment.
I think about the families that are now being notified of what has happen to their family member.
I know it is selfish, but I'm praying that I don't know any of the people who died. It's been hard dealing with the friends we have already lost.

The Major that did the shooting had bever been deployed before. This is not a case of PTSD. This is a case of a person that was just plain crazy and i call this an act of domestic terrorism no matter what the government says. this was prededitated by the major who had to take enough ammo to kill all those people and to wound that many.

The other two soldiers were releasd, They were not involved, but they are still looking for someone else who was involved.
