Cliches, to be honest with you, drive us mad

The fact of the matter is that at the end of the day there is nothing, like, value-added about using cliches 24/7; with all due respect, it is not awesome, it is annoying.

The Plain English Campaign says it has canvassed people in 70 countries to find the most irritating phrases of all.

"When readers or listeners come across these tired expressions, they start tuning out and completely miss the message - assuming there is one," campaign spokesman John Lister said.

People who busily 'touch base' or talk about 'ballpark figures' and 'bottom lines' are not 'singing from the same hymn sheet', they are quietly driving others to distraction.

"Using these terms in daily business is about as professional as wearing a novelty tie or having a wacky ringtone on your phone", Mr Lister said in a statement.

A particular bugbear is the constant use of 'like' as a form of punctuation.

Mr Lister said the campaign had expected geographical variations but the same phrases appeared to be universally annoying.

"Gobbledegook jargon and cliches really are no respecter of international boundaries," he told Sky Television in a cliche-riddled interview.

Other named-and-shamed cliches include:

blue-sky thinking
it's not rocket science
crack troops
between a rock and a hard place
I hear what you're saying
touch base
bear with me
to be honest with you.

What I hear you sayins is that, like, we talk too much in cliches. Bear with me on this one. The bottom line is that we just learn to communicate with each other! To be honest with you, communication is more important than worrying about cliches! It's not rocket science you know. We have got to learn to talk. Know what I mean???

The one that drives me absolutely bonkers is "let's make sure we're all on the same page"......I HATE that cliche!! What if I don't WANT to be on the same page? What if I read faster than you? And what if I wanna read a different book altogether?

I'm also heartily sick of:

"thinking outside the box"......What sort of box? And who the hell sits in a box to do their thinking anyway?

"with all due respect".......I think you're FOS. So why am I being so damned polite about it?!

"24/7" (alternate version "24/7/365").......didn't we all learn back in first grade how many hours there were in a day, how many days in a week, and how many days in a year? How come we have to remind each other all the time??

"it's not rocket science".....it ain't brain surgery either.

I must admit that with few exceptions, I LOVE cliches! The campier, the better! Yep! Can't use a cliche enough in a conversation.

But there is one cliche which is like finget nails on a chalk board to my ears. It's the word, "Like".

You're talking to the hand when you repeatedly use the word "like" in a conversation with me!

I agree with most of you 110%. Cliches can be annoying but look on the bright side, it could always be worse. At least the people using cliches are not swearing and as life is unfair, we have to suck it up and not complain about others' use of cliches. Live and let live I say. Life is too short to worry about these types of things and besides, it's not the end of the world.
