Discrimination in 2009

by herring_RN allnurses Guide

I admit that I discriminate. It is just not possible to know each stranger individually. When approached asking for money my answer is, "NO". I will give food or other needed items but not money.

We have a sad sad number of homeless mentally ill people. Why have we let this go on so long? http://www.homelessmentallyill.org/homeb.html

AN EXAMPLE OF NURSES PROUD HISTORY OF SOCIAL ACTIVISM:
Dorothea Dix RN spent over a year touring every jail, almshouse, and house of correction in Massachusetts. She then presented a report, or "memorial" to the Legislature asking for funds for an institution specially designed to treat the mentally ill. She did the same in state after state, traveling thousands of miles alone and publicizing the terrible conditions she found. Always observing the rules of feminine propriety, she rarely spoke publicly, but she was a persuasive lobbyist behind the scenes.

Discrimination of people with obesity: http://xnet.kp.org/permanentejournal/sum03/stigma.html

People with Down Syndrome are discriminated against regarding medical care and other ways based on an assumption based on IQ rather than true abilities.

RE: discrimination against the mentally ill. There is also the criminalization of mental illness. The jails are full of people who have a medical illness: mental disorders. Yet, the only solution that our society is willing to consider for this population is imprisonment and sometimes death by execution.

There was a sad case in the AJC recently: a schizophrenic woman was released from a state mental hospital despite the pleas of her family to keep her hospitalized. She was sent home anyway where she poured gasoline on her mother and set her afire. NOW the state will house her.....in prison. What sense does that make?

The mother's last words to the rest of her family were "Take care of Na Yong( the daughter who murdered her). Don't hate Na Yong"

I think it was our friend Ronald Reagan that said all mentally ill people had the right to roam the streets, and accordingly funding was cut for programs that the mentally ill needed. Criminalization was the only natural course of action. Not to mention all of the Anti-Social Personalities that float in and out of county jails and the prison system.

@ Herring- Why on ewarth can't the old LAC-USC Facility be used as some kind of transitional housing for the homeless mentally ill? Possible crisis stabilization and re-entrance into the community? We've got a real problem that make many parts of this city very dangerous.

I'll never forget meeting a young HIV pos man who's hallucinations were telling him to infect others in public restrooms. What I find so frightening is that I am sure there are no shortage of stories like that one.

Great idea!
County nurses cannot keep atients long enough to help them. And the number of beds is fewer with private hospitals closing their mental health units and King Drew closed.

I've met so many people at and near the Union Rescue Mission who could benefit from mental health care. And a man I'm afraid will die where he is nearly 24 hours a day. Standing, sitting or sleeping near the same corner. He's worn the same clothes for months.
He will eat and drink what is given him but angrily tells anyoone who trys to get him to accept help, "Leave me alone" (and some curse words).
The young man you wrote about is a danger to others and himself.
