Goodbye Slaughterville, hello Veggieville?
A vegetarian group wants a US town named after a family that helped settle the state to change its name to Veggieville because they think it sounds a lot better than Slaughterville.
The city council of Slaughterville in Oklahoma, a town of about 3,000 in the centre of the state, is due to discuss the proposal by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) next week.
PETA is even offering $US20,000 worth of veggie burgers to an area school if the name change goes through.
But town manager Marsha Blair said the chances of passage were slim to none.
"We do not intend to change the name," she said.
PETA campaign manager Bruce Friedrich says the organisation is focusing its resources on the cruelty to animals that are killed for the food and clothing industries in slaughterhouses.
"Even if the people of Slaughterville are not looking at the cruelty to farmed animals as an issue, it is a fact that anyone, including the residents of Slaughterville, who is eating meat, is supporting the felony level of abuse of animals," he said.
Slaughterville was named after a family that helped settle the area in the 19th century.
The family ran a dry goods store and blacksmith shop.

I live here in OK. I have been to Slaughterville and if there are 3000 people living in the two or so miles it covers in the middle of nowhere I will eat my hat. How did PETA chose this town, simply because of a name and the name does not have anything to do with the slaughter of animals there is not even a slaughter house in the area!!! Some people just have too damn much time to sit around and complain about things, why are they not out saving all the strays that are rounded up and euthanized after a brief three day stint?

yeah, that's what I wanna know!! :chuckle Maybe, if PETA was offering the town some $$, then they could get to talking.
Really, don't we have more important things to consider than the name of a town??
PETA lost my money after the Roy incident here in Vegas. A day after Roy was injured, PETA faxed a letter to UMC that pretty much said...what did you expect, you deserved it, we knew this would happen, so on and so on. Yet they never really attacked the show before since Roy and Sig did such an amazing job with the animals, breeding them and keeping letting them roam free.
PETA needs something to do to keep them busy and you just can't expect someone to start eatting veggie burgers instead of meat.
Slaughterville will not change its name!!! The town council decided yesterday that they were proud of their heritage and the descendants of the man the town is named after are still very much alive and well and were very upset by PETA taking issue with a name that in reality had nothing to do with the slaughter of animals. They did tell PETA that they would would gladly accept their assistance in dealing with their huge abandoned pet population and PETA told them they could apply for a grant they offer to such communities. Sounds to me like they PETA'd out!
Never been to Slaughterville although it cannot be far from my home town. You know the place where they have to take you in?
Actually I find the people in OK are OK! Friendly and helpful.
My former neighborhood has a BBQ place and sausage making facility specialising in hot links. Not for me because of the fat (CCU nurse & all) Still commercial veggie burgers often have chemicals such as preservatives.
