Marine Reservist Attacks Bearded Greek Orthodox Priest Mistaken for Terrorist

Tampa, Florida: (11/12/09) A Marine reservist, Jasen Bruce, is under arrest in Tampa after beating a man whom he believed was a Muslim terrorist. The man turned out to be Father Alexios Marakis, a bearded Greek Orthodox priest in a traditional Greek robe.

(The priest) speaks little English and was lost, police said. He wanted directions.

What the priest got instead, police say, was a tire iron to the head. Then he was chased for three blocks and pinned to the ground — as the Marine kept a 911 operator on the phone, saying he had captured a terrorist.

Bruce later claimed (1) the priest tried to rob him, (2) the priest grabbed Bruce’s crotch and made an overt sexual advance in perfect English, and (3) the Greek Orthodox priest yelled “Allahu Akbar,” Arabic for “God is great.”

Bruce is now facing charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Marakis was hospitalized but does not want to press charges, espousing biblical forgiveness.

Well, here's hoping Bruce does time.

Too bad it's not a crime to be an a*shole, or Bruce probably would have been locked up ages ago.

There's a Sikh community not too far from me. After 9/11 their members were harrassed by people thinking they were Muslims because of their long beards and turbans. Except these folks don't turn the other cheek. Traditionally they were warriors, and even now many carry weapons. So it didn't take long for people to know not to mess with them.

for forgiveness as this priest has reportedly done. Good on him for putting his faith into action.

As for Bruce, well, he truly needs some help.
