McDonalds leaves Iceland....

by Man In Black Platinum Member

REYKJAVIK (Reuters) - Thousands of Icelanders lined up at McDonald's restaurants to order their last Big Macs before the U.S. fast-food chain abandons the crisis-hit island at midnight Saturday due to soaring costs

And they're not coming back....

Killed by unregulated capitalism......

nah...it can't be.

mixed feelings about mcdonald's.
LOVE their food - LOVE it...although i seldom eat it anymore.
but i liken it to the departure of other american icons...
except it's happening in iceland.

maybe that's why my feelings are mixed?

Sounds like in-ept government leadership played a significant role in the downfall of Iceland's economy:

http://www.forbes.com/2009/02/08/ice..._valfells.html

As the blood of the Icelandic economy is literally being drained out with corporate interest rates at 25%, currency restrictions, and foreign government debt amounting to somewhere between 160% to 200% of GDP, Icelanders need to wait until its clueless politicians figure out how to extinguish the political crisis. In the meantime, unemployment has risen in a few months to 10% and will continue to rise as companies are now scrambling to find cash to pay value-added tax. Even with the political crisis possibly resolved with elections in April, it is difficult to see what solutions the politicians have to offer.

Yeah, I'd say that government bears a fair share of responsibility in this mess.

McDonald's is so gross and unhealthy, it's no big loss for anyone.

The failure can be attributed to conservative governance and deregulation of the markets.......

"In economics, they talk about the invisible hand that regulates the market. In Iceland, the free market became so wild that it was not fixed by an invisible hand, but an invisible guillotine. So, in one weekend, the whole class of our newly rich masters of the universe lost their heads (reputation, power, and money), and all the power and debt of the newly privatized companies fell into the hands of the people again.
The lesson is that we need to save a real economy (not the funny money of banks and derivatives) if we are to rebuild our own country....

A real economy needs products to sell, Mr. Leifson says. Banking is "paper money. You can't do anything with paper money."
