I found this story while playing around looking for something else and thought of this thread. It is very very powerful.
In October 1967, I was serving my 12th month in Vietnam. Specifically, I was stationed at a very large 1st Division base outside of the small village of Phu Loi, about 20 miles north of Saigon.

My job was as a fire direction specialist in the headquarters fire direction center of the 8th Battalion, 6th Artillery, 1st Infantry Division.

In very simple terms, this job entailed using chart paper to set up a simulated map of an area where the howitzers would be firing. When a forward observer called in a fire mission, we would plot the coordinates that he would give us from his map and then give the distance (vertical angle) and deflection (horizontal angle) figures to the cannoneers to set off on the howitzers.
During the fire missions, there were usually two chart operators, and they would check each other's figures to ensure accuracy. Then these figures would be compared to the firing battery's figures to further ensure accuracy. Once everything checked, the howitzers would be fired.

One night in October 1967, I was on the shift which was on duty in base camp when a fire mission was called in from an infantry company of the 2nd Battalion of the 28th Infantry, which was in the field in an area somewhere near Phu Loi.
One of our firing batteries was in range, so we became involved in this mission. We could tell right away how urgent the situation was by the sound of the forward observer's voice.
Rest of the story here.

Another high suicide count for the Army in February.
http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/03/05/arm...des/index.html

That flesh we had nursed from the first in all cleanness was given...
To be blanched or gay-painted by fumes - to be cindered by fires -
To be senselessly tossed and retossed in stale mutilation
From crater to crater. For this we shall take expiation.
But who shall return us our children?

Americans' interest in the war waning:

Unfortunately, for those still over there - and their families, shoving the war to the back burner is not an option.

USMC class on recognizing warning signs of suicidal behavior:
http://www.okinawa.usmc.mil/Public%2...revention.html

Since my brother has been in (just over a year), he has been party to 4 suicides - 2 in boot camp and 2 on base. One of the ones in boot was a friend of his and my brother now has some of his gear.

The 2 on base - one was a hanging, the kid was in his closet for days before anyone noticed, and the other was an OD. It is so sad that these kids feel like they have no one to turn to.

We must, MUST keep talking about this. Yes, we drive human beings beyond normal response for pay. Some will say they knew what they were getting into.

That isn't the argument.

Young people killing themselves should make all of us shiver. That isn't how things should progress. It's wrong and avoidable.

The system is broken and adults must act accordingly. We have to act.

What should we do? Suggestions.

I don't know, Abs. What do you suggest?

I have volunteered to write and/or send packages to kids where my brother is stationed that have no one writing them, but have no names as of yet. I feel kind of inert. I am also filling out the paperwork for joining the AVVA (the civilian arm of the Vietnam Vets of America) to see if there is any sort of way I can help.

No matter where I am or what I'm doing, if I see someone in camis or with any sort of hat, tshirt, license plate, or whatever that signifies military service, I stop them to shake their hand and thank them. It kind of saddens me because it seems that they are always surprised, like many people don't do it. We ought to be kissing the ground these vets walk on!
