Finding more vets jobless than others in the same age cohort:
http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/03/20/us....ets/index.html

It is a freaking shame.
My husband, who usually doesn't comment about things r/t war, soldiers, or things military, commented to me the other night - "They use those soldiers up, don't they?"

Your husband is spot on, Elvish! They certainly DO use the soldiers, sailors and Airmen/women right up!!!

After WW2 here in Australia there was (still is I think) a law which stated that any returned service personnel must be given priority for any jobs. Even if another applicant had better qualifications, the ex serving person was to be given the position over the others.

The failure of governments and the civilian working sector to embrace and employ ex-military decrees they should hang their heads in shame.
The lack of re-training, support, transitional support etc is appalling.

Thanks for posting the link, I've emailed it to DS as I think it's something he should seriously think about. While he has a bachelors degree and also a graduate degree in education, isn't going to guarantee him a position once he discharges. The fact he's serving and not building a network in the civilian sector, as is so accurately described in the article, will leave him at a great disadvantage. I know because I witnessed it with DH 22 years ago!

To be honest ... I'd never encourage anyone to serve in the defence forces! I pray constantly that DS will leave and build his career in the civilian world and lead a normal life. While I'm enormously proud of him and all those who serve, I just know first hand how all too often, too many are so badly disadvantaged because of their defence service.

Thanks for that link, Elvish. Yes, he's a great bloke and very good actor.

His statement in this article about voluntary service is all the more reason why nations and the everyday people should do ALL possible to support, assist and make post service jobs available to those who serve.

While those who serve choose to do so, they still deserve every support and assistance during service and once their service is completed. Sadly, that is not always forthcoming. I've witnessed things which has made my blood boil! Hence why now I would not encourage anyone to serve in the military.
Until governments really step up to the plate and really care for and do right by those whom they - the governments- send into harms way, the wilful neglect and disrespect which still prevails today, will continue.

Totally with you on that one, Gracie. I liked this article because I've seen Gary Sinise be one of the few famous people that actually puts his support for troops into action. I am praying that my son does not decide to join the military either. Truth be told, I'm pretty much a total pacifist and don't like violence in any form.

But I agree - even if we gave them everything possible under the sun, it would still not be enough. These guys go through so much even if they never see a day of combat - and those that have seen combat, well all the more. We ought to worship the ground these folks walk on!

US to replace its top commander in Afghanistan

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/05/...ef=mpstoryview

This has personal ramifications for me. I don't know as much about this guy as I'd like to, but I will be praying that he'll do right by our troops. I don't care so much about the GWOT as I care about the young men and women fighting it.

An update on the soldier who killed his comrades
http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/meast/...led/index.html

I don't know if this man was insane or not, as his father wants him to be declared....but I cannot imagine serving in Bosnia, Kosovo, and three tours in Iraq and NOT be insane. We are asking too much of our troops.

Not that this justifies killing anyone (I'm a pacifist, remember?) but my God, we have got to realize that as long as we keep stretching these people to the limit, they are going to keep snapping, and stuff like this is going to keep happening.

Did make me think there was more issues going on with the soldier. Something must have set him off like this and I feel for all involved. Very sad
