Negligence ruling in Katrina floods may cost feds

by sirI Staff

The federal government could be vulnerable to billions of dollars in claims after a judge ruled that the Army Corps of Engineers' failure to properly maintain a navigation channel led to massive flooding in Hurricane Katrina.

"Total devastation could possibly have been avoided if something had been done," said Tanya Smith, one of the plaintiffs. "A lot of this stuff was preventable and they turned a deaf ear to it."
The 36-year-old registered nurse anesthetist lived in Chalmette close to the channel when Katrina hit. She was awarded $317,000 in property damages, the...

Unhappy Re: Negligence ruling in Katrina floods may cost feds
if accurate (which i do believe is), i'd like to see the govt take responsibility for their negligence.
yet it doesn't surprise me they deny any wrongdoing...

I'm not competent to judge the engineering issues, but if it's all true, then it's also an object lesson in failing to maintain infrastructure.

I seem to remember some issues with the Corps of Engineers a bunch of years back when the Mississippi flooded as well. I'll look it up.

Take home message: when you use technology to modify natural systems, better stay on top of it forever.

Anyone know what's happened to funding this stuff over the years?

Would love to see people get reparations out of the pockets of these people who are actually responsible for the negligence that surrounded Katrina.

What happened to the funding is that the government of Lousiana took the money that was given to them by the feds for the upkeep and siphoned it off into other things and into politcal graft. The levee's were the most heavily funded project in our history over the years. Lousiana needs to take resposibility as well in this mess
