NO!!!! to the OLF (Outlying Landing Field)

by VickyRN Staff
Updated Dec 13, 2003 at 01:14 PM by efiebke

The Navy is planning on putting an Outlying Landing Field here in Eastern North Carolina. This proposed field is RIGHT NEXT TO A BIRD SANCTUARY with very large birds such as Canada geese. They plan to use this field for frequent flight training... especially on full moon nights... could be as frequent as q 10 or q15 minutes. Anyone who has ever experienced F-18's know that these are truly the most deafening of all aircraft. The Navy wants to take advantage of this rural area, because we have a large minority population (African American), are relatively poor economically, and have little political clout in their eyes.
We are a Tier 1 community... which means tourism, retirees, and agriculture are our main industries. MOST of our other industries have moved "South" due to NAFTA and a series of hurricanes (the latest being Isabel) has also added to the economic devastation of this area. A beautiful pristine rural environment, tourism, retirees, and agriculture is all we have left. IF the Navy succeeds with its OLF plan, then what is left of our economic base will be utterly destroyed, as well as our quality of life. Already, property values have fallen and people who WERE about to move to our area to retire have decided to go elsewhere due to disclosure concerning the OLF. The Navy plans on seizing private lands that have been in peoples' families for generations. We will lose a large tax base from loss of these agricultural lands... as the Navy pays no property taxes!!! We will receive no economic benefit from the OLF... only neighboring Virginia. We get the noise and pollution, and Southeastern Virginia gets the planes and jobs. I think not!!!!
All three counties in the immediate area have banded together and the commissioners have hired a law firm out of Charlotte. Also, environmental groups are preparing lawsuits. The Navy plans on seizing private property beginning in January. A "tent city" is being planned... the Navy will have to bodily remove these people before they give up their land. Things are heatingup around here... ought to be interesting. You can bet we will catch the eye of national media coverage and minority leaders.
In the end, right will prevail over might. We are meeting together for prayer on a regular basis and our God will fight for us!!!

Wow, Vicky... thijs is the first I've heard of this ! Thank you for bringing it to my attention... will be keeping my antennae out on this one.

My mother lives right near Luke AFB in the Phoenix area, and I knowonly too well all about the constant noise from the training flights.

While training is neccessary, I don't agree with the way the gov't. just comes in to do as they please.. with total disregard of the voice of the ppl... those whom it will most affect.

Will be listening to hear more on this... wish you folks the best.

Hugs,
Your neighbor here in southern Va.,... who just might make more working on those navy planes and projects coming to my neck of the woods than nursing here in this area... (heh heh hehe... just KIDDING !!!)

You know, why don't they just go ahead and decimate all wildlife in one fell swoop, rather than a little bit at a time.

Man's arrogance...somehow they think they can fool around with ecosystems, natural habitats, and the wildlife will still be OK.

Disgusting. Do these people never learn from the past?

amazes me that with base closures on the agenda
a new site would be sought

____ Last December, Defense officials drew up a 24-page strategy memorandum, laying out a plan for a "multi-year campaign" to exempt the military from federal laws including the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the Endangered Species Act, and the Clean Air Act, as well as rules governing solid and hazardous wastes. The strategy also called for Congress to state "that munitions deposited and remaining on operational ranges are not 'solid wastes'" -- a move that with one stroke would exempt the Pentagon from having to clean up the old shells, fuels, and other weapons "constituents" that turn places like Badger into health hazards. <<<

yes it is sickening. Old bases lay useless, or re-aquired by the states in which they are located and built into university campuses or factories....and building more? THIS IS wasteful and inexcuseable. Why not use what we HAVE ALREADY????

this has my blood boiling too.

Next thing you know, they'll be passing a Bill claiming to reduce forest fires, which actually allows the logging companies to take out (profitable) mature trees whilst leaving the (unprofitable) brushwood and undergrowth! (the most flammable parts)
Oh! They already did!

Default Navy Talks Leases, Bars Attorneys
Yes, they think they can do whatever they wish to the people in this area ("Might makes right"):
http://www.wdnweb.com/articles/2003/...ews/news02.txt

Edited to add: I truly respect the Navy and all our wonderful armed forces. I appreciate the job these brave young men and women are doing around the world, especially in dangerous Iraq and Afghanistan. I appreciate and love President Bush, our Commander-in-Chief. I just don't appreciate the Navy taking advantage of us, trying to ruin our economy and quality of life, and aggressively running roughshod over our civil liberties. This has been an eye-opening experience, and one which our forefathers feared--which is why we have the Bill of Rights in our Constitution.
