Pray for Obama

by Tweety Platinum Member

I think Frank Schaeffer is a bit over the top in this video, but the "Pray for Obama" stuff is a bit creepy.

I also saw this bt his concern about the implication of the psalm is valid. It cold be a dog whistles for a nut...

Timothy McVeigh acted out his delusions based on the protocols of zion and religious zeal...

i didn't find mr. schaeffer "over the top", tweety.
instead, i found his concerns valid and ominous.
it only takes 1 madman, and extremists are everywhere.

All Presidents have needed them and continue to need them.

Using Psalm 109:8 on Tshirts and bumper stickers, I agree....over the top.

A crop of bumper stickers and T-shirts emblazoned with that call to prayer for the president have appeared for sale recently online through make-it-yourself outlets such as Zazzle.com and CafePress.com. And most of the "Pray for Obama" slogans are accompanied by a scripture reference: "Psalm 109:8."
In the New International Version translations, that verse reads;

May his days be few; may another take his place of leadership.
Aha! So, they're praying for Obama's tenure to be a short one. Fair enough. But what does that really mean?

A clue may be in the verses of the 109th Psalm that follow verse 8:
May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow....

This is the first I've heard of it and I think it isn't any worse than the countdown clocks people used to have on their profile waiting for Bush to be out of office.

The verse says:

Psalm 109:Verse 8
May his days be few;
may another take his place of leadership.

Rachel included verses not on the t-shirts, bumper stickers, coffee cups, etc. To make it sound worse. That's not fair.

As a congregation, we pray every Sunday for our leaders. Nothing specific - just that God watch over them.

I wouldn't buy a t-shirt . . . but I don't think it means what Rachel and Frank are making it out to mean. And if some take it that way, I'll correct them and tell them not to wear the t-shirt or put the bumper sticker on their car.

Edited - since this can be taken out of context so easily - plucking a verse out of a story that is indeed tragic and bloody - I think it should stop.

You're right! I didn't notice.......she DOES include verse 9, and it does change the meaning completely. Still, I wouldn't want one of those t-shirt or bumper stickers.

We pray for our leaders, local and national, on Sunday, too.

109:8 and 109:9 are reportedly on "bumper stickers, mousepads, teddy bears, aprons, framed tiles, keepsake boxes and t-shirts."

I wouldn't buy a t-shirt . . . but I don't think it means what Rachel and Frank are making it out to mean.

how can it possibly be misconstrued?

steph, what do you think it means?
