I am not blaming prop 13. I like paying taxes on the 1978 value of our house!
Even with additional value for improvements (roof, pipes, wiring, new heater) it is way less than neighbor pay who bough recently.

My question was how was Prop 13 an attempt to get us to try to live within our means?

I voted for Prop 13 when I lived in No. CA! Boy, do I wish we could have a vote here on a similar initiative!

hillary said it all: generous social entitlment ...which is a phrase for...welfare.

There are many older people in this state as well, who cannot afford to stay in the homes they built years ago, now owe no money on, but the taxes are so staggering due to the way the property values are assessed that they have no choice but to "try" and sell those homes.

The problem for me is not with entitlements, its with the fact that because other states that have meager medicaid programs don't take care of their peeps, guess where they migrate to? California! A lot of California's woes come from the fact that people don't have access to healthcare. I think the social policy is a federal issue not a state issue and should be handled as such.

Im ok with the taxation here, I imagine if not for the tax money, my car would have already been completely swallowed by one of the numerous huge sink holes in Los Angeles.
